I think I'm still more of an Michael Jackson fan. But I must say, with all the 3121 hype, I am spending more time on Prince forums and I'm in a total Prince craze right now. I think that I'm becoming more interested in Prince than Michael because Prince is releasing new music to keep me interested, where as Michael is taking a long-term break as it seems. But I assure you, if the rumours of Michael reuniting with his brothers to make another Jacksons album are true, then it's all over for Prince, I'm sorry to say. I have been waiting for years for the brothers to record another album and if they do then boy...I wont give a shit about anyother artist or band in the world!

That's where I am at the mo, but I wouldn't call mine a craze.
It's just pretty cool that I've discovered Prince's talent (oh, and not having to wait an eternity for new material is cool as well)

too old to remember a time before Prince musically speaking that is. I can remember the likes of Iron Maiden and stuff like that but the Music of MJ and J5, just sounded to pop. If you get my drift?

I remember I was 14 and really into BAD. I thought I hated Prince at the time. Then I heard Lovesexy and didn't turn back. It was a bit of an awakening.

I was just really exciting having all those Prince albums to discover.

I think alot of kids like MJ. You can't deny that he's not talented, but there is a kind of lack of sophistocation (for lack of a better word) to his music.

Yeah, I was a Micheal Jackson fan in 1983 and early '84 with Thriller then I saw Purple Rain in the summer of '84 and discovered Prince and I got his other albums, 1999, Dirty Mind/Controversy and I've been a Prince fan ever since. I also became a Jimi Hendrix fan threw Prince, Cure fan, Bowie fan, etc, etc.
Goodnight, sweet Prince.

I've come across few people who weren't J5 fans. I'm not saying everyone was into the Jackson 5, but in the groups I hung out with, they were IT. And I was a major fan of the group. I loved MJ, but Marlon was my ultimate fave.
Yeah, I was a huge MJ fan when he went solo. And when Prince came along, I was still a fan of both. Both of their pictures plastered my walls. But as Prince's music got sexier, edgier, scarier and just plain funky, MJ's pictures slowly came down until the walls were covered with nothing but Prince.
And as I've gotten older, my appreciation continues to grow for Prince's musicianship, his style, just who he is and his journey.
As for MJ, the freakshow continues in full force.

the title of this thread can also be

When Mj fans grow up, they want to be Prince fans

Co-sign! In the 80s, I was a Michael Jackson fan. I remember when Bad came out back in 1987. I know I was only seven then but that is the only reason why I remember it because my cousin used to play the cassette to death (now he denied he ever owned that tape yet he have no problem admitting he owns Dr. Dre or JadaKiss cds rolleyes ). Anyhoo that same year You got the look was playing on the radio and on TV but at the time I didn't know who Prince was.

Five years later in 1992, I became a Prince fan after I saw him on Cream and they played it on radio a lot. Before you know it, I want to know more about him and I started to purchase his albums. And then eventually I became a big Prince fan and I even had a crush on him for two years (now it have resurface lately biggrin ). As for Michael Jackson, I became more casual fan of his after 1995 when he did Scream. Compared to Prince, Michael Jackson is just plain boring.

And there it is in a nutshell. I wanted to say something like that in my other post on this. On top of that, for someone considered as "The King Of Pop", why is he still doing the same dance moves he's been doing since 1983? Why isn't MJ trying to challenge himself by experiementing with different sounds? I bet you the moment he stops trying to follow the path he took in 1981/1982, he'll finally make music worth a damn again. Better yet once he realizes that Thriller was a once in a lifetime album then he'll finally make a great album again. I dare say if he does that, he can woo even the most jaded former fan, even Prince fans.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Ok...ok...ok! I'll confess! Many, many years ago, I was crazy about Michael Jackson. There! I said it. I was very young and musically inexperienced. I thought MJ was the man.

Then along came Prince! Who took a musical strangle hold of my life and has flat out refused to let go!

I guess I still like some of MJ's older stuff, the "Off the Wall" album and some of the stuff he did as part of "The Jacksons" but I couldn't tell you if you paid me, when the last time was that I've heard any of it.

I'll tell you for free when I last heard Prince's first album...I'm listening to it right now!!! lol

Was a J5 and Jacksons fan when I was a kid. I always knew of Prince and I liked him but I wasn't quite ready for a complete crossover. But as my taste matured my interest and love for Prince grew and the light for MJ began to fade. Prince is so much more satisfying to me as a concert goer and music lover. Jamming to new material from 3121 beats waiting around for an overdue hurricane single any day. music

MJ was the first star I was ever into, and I was like 6.

That wore off as I got older and more mature.....say, like 8.

Anyways I became a Prince fan at 15 or 16, and he is/was the first artist I go nutts over.

I still hear MJ's songs from the 80s/90s and love 'em, but mostly cuz they remind me of my childhood.

Anyways, I don't really get why people compare Mj to Prince in the first palce, besides the time they "peaked". Throw Madonna in there to. But if you ask me Prince doesn't compare to them at all!

Glad you like him though.

nicely said. It´s true for me as well. Haven´t listened to History, Thriller, Bad for a loooong time. I still go here and there back to some tracks on History, and Dangerous and those unreleased songs, that one hasn´t heard over and over everywhere. I love Shout, Escape, She drives me wild for example.

BTW, it seems Mike used to have a truly HUUUUGE fan base. wink

Yeah, I was bananas for MJ. Then I generally outgrew him. I'll always love Dangerous and HIStory, tho. Then I got into Prince and couldn't understand how someone could like MJ more than PRince.

I was into Michael Jackson, hardcore, until I was about 16. Then I discovered the Beatles and at age 17 I bought Emancipation. Yes people, it was Emancipation that convinced of Prince's genius.

I had bought Batman back in 89 (more because of Batman than Prince), D&P, Come and The Hits 1. But it was Emancipation that did it for me.

As a young Michael Jackson fan, I perfected many of his dance moves (and I still haven't lost my touch!). I regret not being into Prince at that time - I would probably be able to play guitar today (and maybe do the splits) instead of doing the moonwalk. Oh well.

eek no kidding. Usually ppl, who are not the fans of his music, never really took the time to understand him and like him as a person.

I was never a Prince or Michael Jackson fan when I was a kid. I was more into rap/hip-hop music because I love the beats and lyrical ability from rappers like Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Ice Cube, etc.

I knew about Michael back in 1983 when the "Thriller" video came out but had no interest in his music. After "Living with Michael Jackson" documentary came out in 2003, I started listening to the "Off the Wall" album, and the Jackson 5 music and I realized that Michael was a great soul singer. I always felt that Michael was 10 times better as a soul singer rather than a pop singer.

I first discovered Prince's music after hearing the 1989 batman soundtrack but had no interest in him. In 2001 I rented a Prince concert at my video store,"Sign 'O' the Times", and afterwards I started listening to his music.

From the ages of about 10 to 12 I was a BIG Michael Jackson fan. I used to drawl over his picture on the cover of "Off The Wall". He seemed so cool back then and everyone wanted to be like him.

That being said I led a very sheltered life and new nothing about music apart from the charts. For me "Off The Wall" was a great album, "Thriller" was a great album and "Bad" was a great album. They had ALL the essential ingrediants of being a little bit edge, melodic and tuneful and also some slower ballads.

I remember when "Bad" came out and I thought Michael Jackson was one mean cool dude !! I was about 12 !! I thought he was so good looking and sexy! Doh!

Then about a year later I heard Kiss and the rest of Parade and a bit of 1999 at a friend house. I barely knew who Prince was. I didn't even know his name and I didn't know he'd been around for a while.

But for some reason Michael Jackson never seemed the same. Prince felt like a real person. His lyrics intrigued me. Like "Act your age mammma not your shoe size.." They just seemed completey innocent and real at the same time. Plus I could imagine him talking like this in real life.

I suppose that's the difference with Prince and Michael Jackson. Michael's music just sounds very false next to Prince. I realised I wasn't really learning anything about Michael from his music in the way that I did about Prince.

I felt Prince wore his heart on his sleeve. I always felt that he told you EVERYTHING he was thinking all the time. There were no secrets with Prince. No mask to hide behind. He's always had this great take me as I am attitude and has the guts to sing about things like religion and sex on levels I could not imagine Michael Jackson doing. Could you imagine a song like "Sister"?

In short I felt Prince had something to say with his music. Michael sounded great but underneath it didn't really tell me much.
Shut up already, damn.

Like many of you, I was a Michael fan first, and later became a Prince-fan. NPS and The Gold Experience did it for me and especially 'I Hate U' and 'The Work' made me interested and a real fan.
Nowadays I love them both but I listen to Prince more often, there's so must more to discover in his music! Even after 3 years.
I would still buy every new MJ-release though.
