Any Prince fans start out a MJ fan and grow to be more of a Prince fan? Okay I'm a looooong time MJ fan. I've always been aware of Prince, what he is doing project wise, and I have a rather large collection of his albums, most of them I like, some I can't stand, however he is a really good artist in my book either way. Infact, one of my favorites! However, Michael has always been number one in my book. The thing is, as time goes by I see more and more how Prince LIVES for the music. His music is what his heart is in. Where as Michael lives for children, nature and more of that thing. Yeah, Michael can tell his fans right and left how he lives for music, but if that were the case, he'd have more then 6 albums and 1 EP after his decades in music?
I guess I just started this thread to ask if any of you Prince lovers started out an MJ fan (like I am now) and with time grew to became more of a Prince fan? Maybe it is just "3121" hype, but I think if "3121" is as good as the track on SNL was, it just might happen. Anyone..? anyone?

You are right JasonStar. and as someone else who also lives for music, I really do appreciate Prince more. I was a HARDCORE MJ fan from the age of 3 to the age of 14 really, he was my most listened to artist by a long shot.... for the last few years my most listened to artists are Prince, Nirvana and Tupac.Still a big MJ fan though. |

This is me completely. Michael Jackson was my favorite from when I was 4 until I was 12 then Prince took over and that's where he's been for the last 15 years. Prince was my 2nd favorite. The reason why Prince became my favorite over MJ was because of the gap between Bad and Dangerous. From 1988 to 1991 Prince released 4 albums and I knew I'd always get something new every year where I never knew what MJ was doing. When Black or White hit radio, it was the first time that I wasn't impressed by an MJ song and when they called him "King Of Pop", it just irked me for some reason. It seemed fake and that was the beginning of the end for me with MJ. I still dig MJ's music to a point. Dangerous was the last album of his that I really liked but it'll never be what it was in the 80's. That's my story. [Edited 2/5/06 9:26am] I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Yeah I was a big MJ fan growing up, but as my taste matured I started getting into Prince's music. MJ was cool and I will always in enjoy what he brought to the masses. However, Prince's sound made me appreciate legendary musicians and opened my palate to an entire world of music I wasn't aware of.

I was all about MJ up until WDC. Prince was alright but too weird (sounds crazy now I know).
After WDC came out, I still kept up with MJ and I suppose I'm still a casual fan of his, but now, well 22 years later and I'm posting on prince.org....

Started out as a David Hasselhoff fan (I will spare you the click on my profile, I AM German). Then total MJ lunatic (and I don't know many kids my age who weren't). Then, around '97, I saw Gold on TV (yes folks, commercial Prince music is a good thing now and then!), no need to tell you the rest of the story.
I must say though, while my taste in music changed and widened and I started doing my own music, I came to appreciate MJ again. My favorite cuts jsut aren't the same anymore. All about In the Closet nowadays, for example.

Up until about age 10 I was a HUGE Michael Jackson fan. Then, in 1989, I bought the "Batman" album (with a shit ton of other Batman stuff) and it was all over. My mom bought me "Purple Rain" and "1999" and MJ was no longer my favorite. Also, living in St. Paul probably didn't hurt either. [Edited 2/5/06 10:00am] "New Power slide...."

Well, I think that nowadays I enjoy Prince´s music more. And I don´t know if it´s because of MJ small number of released albums which have become over those 26 years of my life "worn out" while Prince has a huge range of album to choose from. Or if it´s because I´d love Prince´s music truly more. It´s hard to tell. Although I never got into loving Prince as a person as I still love MJ through all the crazyness and weirdness of the past years. Over the years, Mike has just gained a very special place in my heart, while I never really liked Prince as a person when I was growing up. I started to like him quite recently. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

Co-Sign I always will dig Michael as a person, he inspires me and he seems like such a good guy. (I know I will get shit for saying that, but it is what I believe. I really believe he is a good man, who does not know how to communicate well with other people, Mac Culkin said this also during Michael's trial.) misunderstood is also something that I think Michael is So please don't try and kick me for saying it.) As for Prince..the smile he gave Tamar after her SNL performance was amazing. Also, you know Prince had to probably "approve" the "Prince Show" skit on SNL. I'm learning to like P more and more as a person as time goes by.

I was never a huge Michael Jackson fan. My favorite era of his is when he was with The Jacksons for their albums "Destiny" and "Triumph" and also his solo album "Off The Wall". The music was much more funky and a lot less pop. When the "Thriller" album came out, I found it OK but definately not worthy of all the praise it received. From then on he became pop, pop, and more pop.
My favorites have always been people with a harder funkier sound like Prince, Rick James, The Barkays, Cameo, Lakeside, Roger & Zapp, Con-Funk-Shun, Midnight Star, The Gap Band, etc. Michael Jackson as a solo artist has always been toward the bottom of my list of favorites. Andy is a four letter word.

I'm kinda with you on that, JasonStar...
Michael Has always been and probably always will be #1 on my list....but Prince has definately grown on me within the last few years. He pulls in a very close 2nd place to MJ.

when i was 11 or 12, i liked some of the songs off of Thriller
the radio played Michael Jackson songs a lot -- hardly ever heard Prince i even learned how to do the moonwalk to impress my friends & family but as soon as i got a hold of the 1999 album by Prince -- it was all over nothing Michael has ever done could compete with that album yeah, he's a good-enough entertainer (and i know that might sound like an understatement) but put Michael up alongside Prince, and i just don't get how one can't see what's obvious to me Prince is a musician's musician -- his songs & performances are almost always top-notch there's no comparison imo, y'understand

"Fury" is really pushing me towards The Purple side. It is getting really close for me.

Prince is about to become my number 2. Jackie Wilson previously filled that spot but after a while there is really nothing to get all excited about in the world of Jackie. I'm overly excited about 3121 because of the likes of Fury and Black Sweat, but the purple side is not as exciting imo. Let's see how far a thread about Prince's armpits will go over here and maybe I'll change my mind
until then MJ's number one

I was a moderate Jackson 5 fan until I was about 7.
And then came P in 1978 and I was done. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When Mj fans grow up, they want to be Prince fans Co-sign! In the 80s, I was a Michael Jackson fan. I remember when Bad came out back in 1987. I know I was only seven then but that is the only reason why I remember it because my cousin used to play the cassette to death (now he denied he ever owned that tape yet he have no problem admitting he owns Dr. Dre or JadaKiss cds ). Anyhoo that same year You got the look was playing on the radio and on TV but at the time I didn't know who Prince was. Five years later in 1992, I became a Prince fan after I saw him on Cream and they played it on radio a lot. Before you know it, I want to know more about him and I started to purchase his albums. And then eventually I became a big Prince fan and I even had a crush on him for two years (now it have resurface lately ). As for Michael Jackson, I became more casual fan of his after 1995 when he did Scream. Compared to Prince, Michael Jackson is just plain boring.

yep, I started a massive MJ fan....But for the last 15 years, it's been P all the way "I have a date with Lisa. Isn't that wonderful?"

That's 1993 all over for me. Altough now I'm more of a Brighter Death Now fan, but I guess the same phenomenon applies to me too...

I was a big MJ fan around the time of the Bad album and was really into his music/performances etc. I was around 10 or 11 at the time. After Dangerous, my interest in him took a big nosedive.
I'd always like Prince's music but I would say it was around the time of the Symbol album that I really became a big fan. Never looked back since....

I've been an admirer of some of MJ's more groovy tracks. Somehow, the guy never really caught on to me though.. he seemed a bit too unreal for me. And i could never sit through an entire album, especially some of the sugary ballads (ben, she's out of my life, that kinda stuff) made me cringe.. yuck!
During the time with all the statues and the king of pop-crap he really lost me. Ok wanna be the king of pop? Play me a guitar-solo i can dig! Oh you mean the king of pop can't play? Nevermind! I did and still do admire MJ as a singer though, and his dancing wasn't too bad either. It's just a shame that it apparently takes him 100 years to produce a new album. I guess he's too much of a perfectionist to be able to spontaneously write songs. You won't see MJ running into a studio, lay down all the tracks to a song, sing all the vocals in 1 or 2 takes, and be done with the thing within an hour. Actually, i think P and MJ are very different artists, with a completely different approach to music.
