Prince's dress sense - does he look girlie?

Hey all, well its ben a while since I posted a thread here on the org.

Today someone thought they would point out to me that 'Prince looks girlie' & so is incapable of creating good music lol

That aside, it spured me to post this thread. Now we know it doesnt affect his musical ability but what do ya'll really think of the way Prince dresses?

Does he look girlie & stupid or do any of you think he looks pretty cool?

Well, he has made some definite fashion missteps over the years...but has been looking pretty sharp as of late. Just like his music, Prince's fashion sense is part of what makes him unique. I wouldn't want him to look like anyone else. If nothing else, he never looks boring. Who else would have the balls to wear a cloud suit (Raspberry Beret video) complete with cloud boots? lol

Nah! He looks uniquely Princey. He is still one of the only artists out there that dares to dress that way. Shows balls (especially when he wears tight pants!) lol
Just somewhere in the middle,

Prince looks great, not girly at all. It seems as though the twins are in balance inside him: the masculin and the feminine, intertwined. Yin, yang. Drop dead romantics appreciate a little femininity here and there.

Time is a trick. Now is the moment of power.

Couldn't have said it better myself! In fact Prince loses some of that when he wears a regular pinstripe suit. It has always been about his expression of individuality and doing what he feels he needs to do/wear/create...etc., that keeps me coming back for more - year after year.

The last night...with the flowing train... JUST watching the man strut around, all the while keeping the train from getting in his way was fun to watch. Kinky, elegant, and romantic - biggrin

Oh, and did I mention he played the piano too? wink

his style is unique but seriously i don't think i would ever have a guy who dresses like a girl. it's one thing to be a bit feminine but it's another to dress like a girl. i can never tell my parents that i like the music of a guy who looks like a girl on purpose. even mj is better! lol.

And what has his clothes got to do with his music? Your parents shouldn't mind.

Prince's clothing has been part of the statement he wants to make almost since the beginning of his career.

From the bikini drawers, leg warmers, a trench coat in the early 80s to the customized suits that he's currently wearing, his outfits have run the gamut from being feminine to masculine.

Prince has been wearing heels and colorful clothes for so long that if he suddenly started wearing tennis shoes, T-shirts, and jeans everybody would think something is wrong lol

For the record, I think he looks cool. I wouldnt personally dress like that but thats why his dress sense is so cool - not many people would dress that way & so its one of the many things that makes P unique.

Next question:

Has Prince ever listed Little Richard as one of his influences because the dress sense is shockingly similar?

I don't think that Prince has ever mentioned Little Richard as an influence.

It's not really unusual for a rock/pop star to dress in clothing that is flamboyant.

Elvis went around in gold suits and wild karate style jumpsuits.

David Bowie has always been very unique and unconventional with his clothes.

Elton John is known for wearing crazy outfits. Freddy Mercury used to sometimes get out onstage barechested, wearing a robe, shorts and no shoes or socks.

Michael Jackson has been wearing unique custom clothing since his Thriller days. In fact, the suits with "dragon" motif that MJ was wearing a year or so ago looked great on him.

James Brown looked crazy in the 60s and 70s with his hair in slick, towering pompador and JB would dress in wild get-ups.

It's true that Prince does wear unconventional clothing, but so do a lot of other pop stars.

Hell yeah, Prince looks girlie. just ask anyone on the street. That's been part of the image for a long time...

He has been known to wear designer women's clothing (for those rare times he does wear other people'stuff). So it's technically girlie.

Eye makeup? Plucking your eyebrows, and wearing a thick layer of base? He does all this 95% of the time.

Who can forget his Brady Bunch flip hairstyle from the last Hit and Run tour?

His music is very feminine too. Hence he reaches many women emotionally.

Hell, he released an album called... "Lovesexy"!

The only way Prince could win over the masses now (girlie is usually considered a cliche of the 80's) is to come out all natural, with a fro, tanned (like in the AlphabetSt video), and singing in his deep rock voice (like the live "Peach").

Oops... Lenny Kravitz already did it!

I am personally a Prince fanatic, but my friends sure aren't.

Thank God that Prince is able to express himself the way he does. He balances the masculine and feminie sides well. Everyone has that within in them, don't think that you don't.

Prince looks great but I hate those Over-sized suits and I don't want him to Beef up. I noticed his Bulkier look. He looks Best when he has those Cute clothes and when he has longer hair. I think he looked the best around 1988. He's still Gorgeous and always will be but the days of Sign O the Times, Lovesexy ,and even Batman were his greatest looks. Of course this is just my opinion.

I think the way he dresses is specific to him only. I think if anyone else tried to dress like he did, they'd look foolish.

As we all know Prince has always, blurred the gender lines, like only he can.

He's Prince, but he's the KING of Androgyny.

Yes, Prince looks girlie. That's what attracts me to him. Some of his songs are girlie (i.e. Do Me Baby. What exactly does he mean by "Do me?") His hair is definitely girlie, even when it's short. I think it shows how comfortable he is with himself. I don't know him personally but I think he's comfortable being feminine, wearing the heels, the hair, the clothes. I think it works for him because of his size. Brian McKnight couldn't go around looking like that. A lot of women, and men for that matter, like his girlieness, even if they don't admit it. Anybody hear that Jamie Foxx joke about how he almost fell in love with Prince?...too funny

What is wrong with a guy that looks girlie or wears "women's clothing"?
Women wear "men's clothing" all of the time. It can't go the other way? What's wrong with colred hair? Or men wearing earings? Or men with long hair?
Oh no! Don't be too feminine now.
Don't want to be mistaken for... a girl.
The whole thing is silly. It is SO natural for a human to want to wear any thing they want to put on their body.
Why are ppl so restrictive of what they think ppl should or shouldn't wear?

just my opinion, of course.
