Prince [takes cell phone, dials Universal number]:"Talk. ....Uhm, sorry. I mean, my PPs been tellin' me that the kids goin' buck wild over me shredding shit to shreds with 'Fury'... f*ck 'Black Sweat', put 'Fury' out now. Got it?"

Universal: dead

Some of you have low standards for Prince music . . . and someone stated I said Prince wasn't a "musician," which is wrong, I said Miles Davis was a "true musician . . . he was progressive. he didn't fall asleep into a Kind of Blue funk . . .Prince puts out crap over and over again. I only say this out of frustration because I dig his music. At least Rainbow Children had flashes of brilliance (minus the voice overs). Black Sweat, Te Amo, and Fury is a snooze. Excellent guitar work is only window dressing for a lackluster song.

The song would be good even without guitar solos. It has urgency, a cool melody and a good chord progression, and a killer bridge, great singing, among other little things.

Well, I'm not the kinda fam that thinks that Prince invented everything in music, but I think it's unfair 2 say that BS is a Pharrel-kind sound...I think it's the other way around...Pharrel is highly influenced by Prince...
I wouldn't say that. Everyone knows Pharrel has a hard on for Michael Jackson, and everything he does is derived from him.

What sort of release is this song getting? I've been searching music store websites left, right and center and I can't find it. Is it going to be a download only song or what? What about the album? Will it get a proper release like Musicology? I would assume so because of the deal he signed with Universal, so I would also assume the singles get commercial releases as well. But you never know with Prince releases, he has a strange way of releasing his music.

Some songs Black Sweat reminds me of:

Silicon (production)
Hot Thing (echoed drum part)
Da Da Da / SOTT live (marching drums)
Kiss (minimalism/vocal performance)
Undisputed (spoken part)
Love4OneAnother (from GCS2000 - high synth sound)
Let's Work (lyrics)
Glass Cutter (overall feel)

Any others that come to mind?

Add Nasty Girl to the list.

I hear a brief synth line very similar to Brand New Orleans.

Be honest with yourselves: Listen to something like Splash, or Wonderful Ass or a whole host of others, and say to yourself, does Black Sweat even compare? Listen to the freedom in those old vocals, the way the melody seems to be from some other world. This is the Prince I love. Some motherfucker who could make Andre3000 look like a dick, now Andre is the genius, Prince is merely so, so.

Except for fury, which I love, but it is still not any where near the great ones.

IMHO Splash is one of the most god-awful pieces of sickly trash Prince has ever done. It shows you how people have differnt tastes I guess. shrug

Wow...you're definitely right about opinions. Splash is by far my favorite Prince song from the NPGMC...its the only one I consider as good as the stuff from the 80s (maybe cause it is). I like Sweat...its good but not great...like most of the other stuff I have downloaded from NPGMC.

I could not believe my ears when my husband was listening to the radio and black sweat came on hot 97. In case you don't know hot 97 is the number one hip hop station in new york. It was played by funk master flex. I was going crazy when I hear the opening beat, and my husband was just looking at me like oh boy a new prince album is coming out. lol.

ARE YOU SERIOUS???!!! HOT 97??!! What time does his show come on? That's GREAT news. Hot 97 hasn't played a new Prince song since before they became a hip hop station and that was during the D&P era. Wow I'm speechless.

I think the song's better than Te Ono Crappysong, but it's still a bit of a shapeless nonentity. I preferred the live acoustic version on the 2004 tour boots.

Black Sweat is good but it honestly lacks the sheer brillance of the true classic Prince stuffs. I mean, come down everybody, there isn't anything new going on in this track. It's basicly Prince making ultra classic Prince music... and actually i like it, but nothing to go mad about either.

Hey guys....Sometimes music is not rocket science...Sometimes it's about having fun...People on this site make Prince out to be Mozart 24/7...the dude has released some pretty fun, check your brain at the door tracks over the years..."Black Sweat" is in the same tradition as "Irresitable Bitch," "Horny Toad," "Get Off," ect...I think Prince fans can a be bit too serious about the man...Before I heard "Fury," "Black Sweat" featured as much bad ass energy from the man that I've heard in a long time...I mean, what are we talking about people...It's just a fun song...it's not that serious...Lighten up people....

Thomas : Prince - Black Sweat (video clip, 2006) Jesus, which balsam he does use to guard its face for old age? Which vedische dis does one find each evening in Prince's home? From which cup does drink he that he and his still golden a throat has and still with the same hilaric can seduce? Anno 2006 Prince in everything is still as tight as a chicken's ass. http://boss.streamos.com/...ksweat.asx
