Peace, David This is pure speculation, but when Te Amo was released everywhere before it was released on NPGMC there was all kind of hell over there about "why wasn't it released first here!!!!!" Maybe with this single NPGMC got a brief window of offering it before it gets to itunes. Yeah , I suspect Black Sweat/Beautiful Loved & Blessed will hit itunes next Tuesday. I think the Prince camp wanted a week of an "exclusive" which its not really beacuase its available at Napster and other small places. But itunes is the big daddy of digital sales and has a big influence on the Billboard charts. It will be there in a week at the latest. They did the same with S.S.T and I think meant to do the same with Te Amo.

How do Universal go about convincing the radio stations to paly Black Sweat?
Do they heavy them, bribe them, beg or what? How does it work? When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

But its way early. It is early, especially when Madonna's "Sorry" started at #180 last week and it's headed for top 5. [Edited 2/8/06 15:22pm]

Judging by recent news reports, in the previous few years they would have offered station program directors expensive vacations, iPods, laptops and sundry other bribes to get their artists played. But with the N.Y. Attorney General's campaign against modern-day payola, I'm guessing everything's changed. Maybe they just have to leverage favors. ("We'll set you up with a market exclusive interview with Hot Artist X if you play this record from Artist Y," and so forth.) It actually makes Uni's job tougher, I'll bet. They could have just bought Prince a hit if they wanted one bad enough in the past. Peace, David

At around 10:30 PM on Monday night (02/06), I did a search on iTunes for 'Prince'. Black Sweat was not listed. I then did a search for 'Black Sweat'. It returned a number of results, 2 of which were 'Black Sweat' and 'Beautiful, Loved, and Blessed' by Prince. I listened to the 30 second snippets of both songs, and then tried to buy them. The store would not allow me to buy them at that time.
By the time I searched for them on Tuesday, the songs didn't show up at all. So, as far as I'm concerned, the songs were about to become available for purchase - and something happened. I wonder what went wrong? Did Prince demand 1 week at NPGMC prior to iTunes? If so, I think that was a bad decision in this case. Coming off of SNL, having a new single & video on iTunes the following Tuesday would have been huge. Of course, I think he should've done 'Black Sweat' as his second song on SNL, so what do I know? I just feel like 3121 could be his biggest album since D&P, (not that it would affect how I feel about the music - but it seems like Prince wants this, too), and it makes me scratch my head when this kind of stuff starts happening again with the promotion of the new material..

Yep, that's me, but I'm in Charlotte, N.C., and I've never had the pleasure of attending the Lovesexy parties...although I know a few regulars who tell me they're off the hook! Peace, David

Great stuff. I hope Universal keeps pushing and pushing this single to radio and ALL video outlets. Hopefully, Black Sweat will be sold on iTunes next week. We have to be patient. [Edited 2/9/06 8:15am] I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

i'm struggling to ascertain public perception of this song really. we're getting a couple of reports of DJs playing it then insulting it. at first airplay wasn't 'amazing' yet now a week after its debut its the number one added song on one format and in the top5 for another. on the org it seems most are in favour which is a good sign. we'll see, looking positive for both songs, be amazing if they both ended up in the top100 - wonder when the last time prince has two songs in the hot100 was!

I think its the case of a good number of stations adding it and testing it out playing it a couple times right now. While Black Sweat's spin total is not that impressive yet, I was suprised to see how many stations have actually added it to their playlist. Lets hope they play it more now.

August 27, 1994. "Letitgo" was number 38 that week and "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" was at number 49 in its 26th and final week on the chart. On the R&B charts, "Musicology" and "Call My Name" shared a few weeks together in 2004. I mean, since you asked and all...
