a. It's very legal to take a picture of whoever in a public space without their permission.

b. They have no right to confiscate (steal) anything.

I think in the past they got away with it because they'd just take the film out of the camera and it wasn't worth it to pursue trying to pursue some sort of legal action for the average person. You gonna hire a lawyer to get your $5.00 worth of film back?

Now with digital cameras taking the the card isn't enough, so you had the incident a couple of years ago where they took that dudes camera (what ever happened with that anyway? Probably settled). Now that could motivate someone to go to court.

Since Prince has had bad press over that kind of silliness in the recent past, I'd say go for it. I'd be surprised if his security hasn't changed their policy to just asking you to stop.

Dude's camera was not stolen. It was left at the airport security desk.

I didn't say his camera was stolen. "took that dude's camera".

Airport security or not, they didn't have a right to take it in the first place.

Someone tried that already and that got countersued. Stop giving out bad advice.

I am not famous or rich and I don't want anyone taking my picture on the street. It is not cool.

Prince will clearly lose that case if he hasn't settled out of court already. Do you think Prince is more important and has more rights then the other celebrities who can't escape the press and Paparazzi? Public figure in a public place gives him NO rights what-so-ever and if you don't know this you are dumber then I think. Actually even non-public figures have no rights in a public place as evidenced by all the cameras cities install in downtown and high crime areas.

Boy you don't surprise me with the Dumb comments. Speaks volumes about you. It may well be legal to take pictures of people in the street but, that does not make it right.

You can easily manipulate pictures these days or sell them on E-Bay. If you don't have an issue with this I think we know who has a issue.

Everybody has a right to privacy and in the Airport incident the camera was left at the Airport Security desk and P filed a counter-suit against the guy who took the picture. I am not sure if this was settled but P can keep a suit going for a long time. The average person can't afford to and that is the whole point of counter-suing.

What we all could do is ask to take a picture and not run the risk of being sued.

What difference would that make. I saw the guy and that's what counts, right?

You need to check in with the org more often. Tickets were still available through ticketmaster up until Thursday afternoon. I was front and center in the theater and got a good close look at the man play. Amazing.

Yeah NWF, I felt bad for you. I posted as soon as I saw your story that were tons of tix still on ebay and craigslist. heck i might have even given you mine..... I didn't even leave my house til 10:40pm or something like that.

And Endorphin, no need to give me that frowning face. I wasn't advocating getting into altercations with celebrities. I was just curious about the legalities of taking pictures etc. I used to work at an ad agency and we always used to have problems where we could only publish peopel's photos from events we held if we got them to sign a release. And we had to pay models usage fees to use their shots. Yet paparazzi always publish pictures without releaes and they get published.

So this, mixed with the whole "taking people's cameras" thing makes me wonder in a purely academic sense what the legalities are.

I wasn't directing that face just at you, just at the thread in general. It went from a nice happy story of NWF seeing Prince on the street into a whole re-do of the photo-rights/camera-stealin debate that has happened over and over in this forum. For those who haven't been through this topic before (although I see many familiar people stating the same ol stuff on this thread) you have perfectly valid questions. It just seems TO ME to belong in a different thread. Not jacking NWF's happy story. Again, that's NOT directed at you exclusively, just the direction of this thread in general.

And, with THAT said, I'm now ALSO jackin' this thread lol So, i promise I'm off my soap box smile

NWF was the first one to mention cameras being confiscated. So it went there for a minute. Not like we went off on something entirely unrelated like who's better, MJ or Prince .

I don't think I was ever on those previous threads and dind't know it was a hot topic on here (although I undertsand the phenomenon!).

And yeah since NWF brought it up it seemed relevant.

But back to the topic, that is cool that NWF saw him on the street. WHo knows how anyone will react to seeing someone you really like like that?

Most NY'ers just watch from afar and never say anything. SOmetimes I will approach them. I saw Fred Armisen in my neighborhood a month ago and I said hi and asked him about doing the Prince skit and he said "not til February". Actually this was probably like 2 or 3 months ago.

I still feel bad for NWF that you went down to the theatre and left emptyhanded. The scalpers did seem shady I admit. if only you had gone to the internet cafe on 42nd you could've scored one. sad

If ther'es another show and I can get an extra ticket, i will orgnote you!

You think Moz could be touring the states this year too in support of his new album?

You know Gary, I believe things happen in the universe for a reason. And perhaps it wasn't my time yet to see the man. But when the time comes I know I'll have a wonderful experience. So while I was disappointed that I didn't seen my hero right then and there, I'm not gonna stress it. I'm pretty sure he'll do another major tour (with him headlining this time) later this year after the new album's released.
