What were Prince's worst 3 albums and Y?

IMO
Diamonds and Pearls (although a few great cuts)
"the SYMBOL" album (although a few great cuts)
The Gold Experience (only 2 great cuts)

Touchy subject, but I'm game. There is a different between worst and favorite, however.

Least favorites:

For You- too immature for my taste.
Black Album- Very important, but I'm glad we got Lovesexy instead.
New Power Soul- He didn't even want to put his name on this one.

Worst:

For You
New Power Soul
Graffiti Bridge- I LOVE Prince's input, but the extraneous tracks should be dropped! If it were only Prince's material, this would be top 10 for me.

I completely agree. I LOVE this album, but I can't take some of the songs - esp. "Graffiti Bridge" and "Melody Cool." They are pure crap.

However, feltbluish, I've got to disagree with you - I think prince, Diamonds and Pearls, and Gold Experience were all great (but I hate the NPG Operator).
I mean, like, where is the sun?

I knew this would B ruff!

U got the right tracks from diamonds and pearls, don't forget strollin' but the rest of it was WAY too busy/jumbled/Tony M./Rosie G.(great voice, but a little overbearing and monotonous)weak beats, weak samples, just WEAK

Symbol- best cut = Damn U, runners up = Sweet Baby, love 2 th 9s

Gold only good songs = SHHH and Billy Jack Bitch
SHY is pretty good too. I think Pussy Control is possibly the worst song ever recorded by the man.

I must add that I do think that all of his albums hold merit to some degree. Picking least favorite Prince albums is like picking your least favorite relatives- I love them all but some just get on my nerves at times...wink

The Rainbow children - While the music is good the lyrics and the computer voice ruin this album to the point where I can't listen to it.

Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic - The original wasn't very good so why would he release a remix album of the same material? The new versions are just terrible. The only thing that makes this cd worth owning is "Beautiful Strange"

Diamonds and Pearls - A few great tracks, but this album has never flowed for me. I find myself constantly hitting skip if I bother putting it into the player.

For You: Prince's first album, and aside from Soft and Wet, did not contain any "signature" songs or any real "character" yet. This album is a sacrificial lamb in Prince's catalog . . . just served to get his name out there.

Chaos & Disorder: Basically comprised of "throw-away" songs, this was released simply out of contractual obligation. I doubt most of these songs would've seen the light of day otherwise. There are[.i] a few very good tracks on there, but we are talking about entire albums.

New Power Soul: I don't know if you can count this one, since technically it is a NPG album, but realistically it [i]is
a Prince album . . he even promoted the shit out of it on TV. The songs just all sound too "dull" and the lyrical content is just silly. I understand the concept was to capture the "live" feel of a show, but at the time it was NOT what Prince needed to release. There are a couple of decent tracks on this one, but not enough.

If NPS is disqualified, then I only have one other one that might even come close to this list, and that would be Come. But I love that album, so it's not on my list!! smile

My least favorites (and why)...

Diamonds and Pearls (why: Tony M.)
For You (why: just too boring)
Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic (why: he tried too hard...)

I still very much like a few tracks off of each one, though-- namely Gett Off, The Greatest Romance Ever Sold and Beautiful Strange (off the remixed CD).

WHY do you guys hate Tony M. sooo much?! I liked him. Anyway:

1. Chaos and Disorder: Never heard it but didn't want to after seeing the video for "Dinner With Delores."

2. The Black Album: Heard one song and got sick

3. Come: I couldn't get into it. The only song I like is "Dark"

GRAFFITI BRIDGE-3 outstanding tracks.1 good one.OUT of 17 songs.
DIAMONDS AND PEARLS-the rapping and over production on this record make it hard to sit through
CHAOS AND DISORDER-3 good songs
NEWPOWER SOUL -i only like Come On and Wasted Kisses
THE VAULT-No....definitly not representative of the man's hidden treasures.

2 more than 3; I'm in a generous mood at the moment..

5th worst: Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic
Wannabe "trendy" & all over the place

4th worst: Grafitti Bridge
"Tick Tick..", title song.. UGH. This is 1 bridge that deserves to be burned

3rd worst: Come
No.. GO - far away from this 1

2nd worst: New Power Soul
cliché, derivative, uninspired; weaker than watered-down Kool-Aid

THE WORST: Chaos & Disorder.
EXACTLY.
I'll see you tonight..

New Power Soul (Lifeless; nothing new, powerful or soulful about it.)

Chaos & Disorder (Phoned it in to complete a contractual agreement and it damn well shows. A few songs had promise had he not had a case of sonic premature ejaculation.)

Come (See Chaos & Disorder. So forgettable I sincerely forgot what was on it.)

Since he was just starting out as a neophyte kid, diving in full throttle for the first time with For You, I can't put that on the list. Aside from "Soft & Wet" it's not that distinctive, but at the same time he had not set any sort of standard for himself. It's a pleasant album, not a terrible one. But it would put me to sleep. Graffiti Bridge doesn't feel like a true Prince album because he allowed too many cooks in the kitchen on that one. The great tracks overshadow the middle of the road and weak material.

I have to agree with PART of the first post...

Prince's early 90's records (Diamonds and Pearls and O+>) I think are WAY to self-consciously commerical to even come CLOSE to competing with his early material. I just listened to O+> last week (for the first time in about 3 years), and I was shocked at how little it held up for me 10 years later.

For the 3rd record, I'd have to go with Rave, just because I haven't listened to it in a year, and I can't imaging when I will again.
