BorisFishpaw said: Oh yes, I'm not saying that all those side projects aren't "Prince". I'm
just a stickler for correct labelling and filing. What Prince puts on the cover of an album, and how he decides to label it are imporant to him. It reflects how he wants a particular album to be percieved, and what context it should be viewed in. Newpower Soul is a prime example. Yes it's got a picture of him on the front and he sings lead on the album, but it is still NOT a "Prince" album... it is an "NPG" album. It was NOT made to be viewed in the same context as 'Emancipation' or 'The Gold Experience'. It was designed to be viewed in the same context as 'Goldnigga' and 'Exodus'. It's all about respect for the artists wishes, and what context they want their art viewed in. It's like saying that the Gorillaz album is really by Blur cuz Damon Albarn sings on it, or that the Tin Machine albums are really David Bowie records. If an artist decides to release an album under a different name, they are making a statement about the content and the fact that it should be viewed separately, and not considered as the next follow-up. They are stating that this is a detour down a 'side road', not the next stop on the main road that they're travelling. 2shé, Boris! Out of respect for Prince, there are only 32 albums to date. Out of respect for Prince's output, there are 50+ (exact number depending on your personal "what's-really-a-Prince-album" rules) albums. "Whatever skin we're in

I must admit I'm kinda in two minds about the Chocolate Invasion and The Slaughterhouse, and whether to include them or not. In retrospect I think it would be valid to include them in a list of Prince albums. Yes they are compilations of previously available material, but that material was never previously released in 'album form' it was only released as individual tracks. So I think it kinda comes under the same catagory as 'Crystal Ball', in that it is a compilation, but has been personally arranged by Prince into an 'album' that he feels flows as an 'album', rather than just a collection of songs. In the same way the Sign O' The Times was a new 'album' created from the ashes of other projects, and the way The Vault and Chaos and Disorder are 'albums'. [Edited 2/1/06 13:13pm]

[Edited 2/1/06 13:13pm] About what u said b4, Boris, i'm not sure that Prince always "wanted" 2 label some "protégés" albums as not being Prince albums. It might b true in some cases. It was meant in some cases, 4 reasons such as "creating the illusion of being part of a revolutionnary minneapolis sound" (Jamie Starr productions), acknowledging a real collaboration ("Times Squared", "Come 2 My House", "GCS 2000"), a sort of "homage" 2 a 70's tradition (Larry was GCS, George was Parliament & Funkadelic, Roger was Zapp, Boosty was Bootsy's Rubberband... i'll b NPG), or featuring a singer (Jill Jones, Sheila E., Carmen Electra...) as being the hype new "Prince girl". This being said, i think part of the reason so many albums were labelled under false band/artists names was that WB didn't allow Prince 2 release more than one album per year, when he wanted 2 release 4 or 5. I'm saying this because, since the "emancipation" there's only been a very few albums which were labelled under other names than Prince/O+> (or NPG which fools no one: even non-Prince fans know that NPG is in fact Prince.) Albums such as "Xpectation" or "N.E.W.S." were not "Madhouse", they were "Prince". So i think that now, except when really working with someone such as Larry & Chaka, or playing the "NPG" game, Prince just can ALLOW himself 2 release EVERYTHING under the Prince name... Just a theory, though.

As listed at the NPGMC, there 40 official Prince or O+> releases. Plus the NPG albums are included. Actually Musicology isn't even listed in Vaults there but that should be a given.

Shouldn't that really settle it? No, because the NPMC DOESN'T list 40 official albums at all. It lists 31. It also seperates them distinctly between Prince, and NPG releases, (further reinforcing the fact that they should considered seperately). It also lists EPs and some singles too.

Exactly. and the same goes for 'One Song' & 'Cybersingle' too. the title of this thread is: Is 3121 Prince's 40th Commercial / Internet release?' it doesn't say 'album'.

Maybe I should change the title of the thread then, to, um, ah ... The All Inclusive Prince Debaters Release List ... or something like that. LOL. Anyway, I just thought this could be Prince's 40th release, be it , or under the Madhouse name or NPG/Tora Tora. I did not look over at Housequake or NPGMC to see what's what. If I did that then there would be no thread to debate, but this is fun. I don't know why I did not include the BEAUTIFUL xperience EP. Well, maybe TMBGITW made it onto The GOLD Experience release in 1995. But I have to tell you, to each his/her own when categorizing by alpha your CD list. It's weird, if we just list the Prince albums/releases, it will be a shorter list, but if you take a look at what he's done, it's a much longer list. I sort of put Prince in the same section as George Clinton. Regardless if he is soloing his CD or being Parliament or Funkadelic or the Pfunk All-Stars, it's still George Clinton and his clones. I think of Prince as George in a way in the back-catalogue the two have. I love that I got into Prince and I will follow him until The Vault is cleared of all the paisley vibe. I look forward to another chapter in Prince's story and to the chapters yet to be written and those written and yet unseen.
