Do your parents listen to Prince? If not, what do they listen to? Thought it would be a cool topic to see what your parents are into. Please include their relative age too, so we know how old they were back when in the early 80s.
My dad doesn't say much about liking him or not - we don't talk about it. I pretty much think that he thinks he's kind of "weird".. I doubt he's been exposed to anything but his #1 hits. He knows I went to see Prince in concert but also that I'm big into LOTS of music, I just went to see Aerosmith a couple months ago. I listen to all the same things he does too. We always play "name that artist" in the car and keep score whenever we go anywhere. Plus, he likes some artists that might be regarded as "non-masculine" by the general public too - like Journey or Earth Wind & Fire. He likes mostly classic rock like Pink Floyd, ELO, Kansas, Boston, Tom Petty, etc. My mom doesn't like him. I sent her some select songs to listen to, like I'm Yours, Pop Life, Let's Go Crazy, and some others. She didn't like Pop Life but really dug I'm Yours (I sent her the first snippet before his voice comes on, and asked her if she wanted to hear the rest. She had no idea I was talking about a Prince song. She really liked it so I sent her the whole thing. I asked if she listened to it and she said "yeah six times already!" I asked if she knew who it was and she did, but only AFTER I sent her more than the first snippet. I didn't want her to judge the song, but take it for what it was.) She is very eclectic and listens to LOTS. Enya, Beatles, Boston, Cat Stevens, Alan Parsons, Heart, Yanni, Pet Shop Boys, Patti Smith, and WAAAY too many others are in her collection of probably a couple thousand cds, vinyl (mostly), and tapes. It just mind-boggles me that she doesn't like him. I asked her if she remembers when he came out, she said yes but she didn't listen to that kind of music back then (when she was in her early twenties), that that wasn't "party music". We really agree on almost all musical tastes (except new stuff). After sending her some of his masterpieces, I know I can't win. Of course she hasn't bought any music in probably 4 years or so, so I wouldn't say she's "into it" so much anymore or open to new things.

Big band stuff, mainly... both parents were born in the 1920s. My Mum hates the fact that she likes Parade! She thought Prince was Satan... I still remember his disapproving 'tut' at the When Doves Cry video on Top of the Pops... One day she comes up to my room and Venus de Milo is playing, "Oh, what's this? This is nice." "It's Prince." "Oh."
And she hated the fact that her Satan wrote Anna Stesia... still, she's cool now. I loves my mom!

LOL, no way in hell, they hate me listening to Prince because they think he's "sex obsessed" (which I would agree with) and "weird" (pfft... whatever). They listen to alot of Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and a lot of big band stuff. My dad also likes Elvis Presley and listens to a lot of rockabilly. I think it's funny how they listen to probably the most normal, conventional singers you can think of, but I listen to Michael Jackson and Prince. LOL

When I was young my parents (especially my dad) hated the fact that I liked Prince so much, they thought he was evil and sexually obsessed, and they definately thought he was a bad influence on me. My dad once broke my brothers' Purple Rain album in two after having heard about backwards messages on that album, hehe!
Around Parade my mom started to like quite a few songs but my dad still hated him, he thought Prince was a weirdo and he hated the high voice and the drumcomputers. Then one day he heard the Rainbow Children CD (or was it The Vault?) and that interested him because the music was more organic. Turning point was me showing him the Alladin DVD. He loved the tightness of that band and he even bought the DVD for himself. So it took him about twenty years to finally get into Prince, hehe, but now he is a great admirer of him. My parents are in their upper fifties. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Yes, they do.
They remember him being around before me. Generally, they like the slower, more commercial material. My Mum takes 'Emancipation' to work and listens to it on her CD player. Pretty cool for a 50 year old I think! Peace Mr7 [Edited 1/27/06 1:41am]

Oh boy well my dad never liked him. He thought he was really vulgar and naughty! LOL!
My mom is a different story. She LOVED Prince. I can still remember her watching Sign of the Times with her glass of wine singing along to Slow Love. That was her favorite song! When we first got cable in like 1991 my dad was like "Pat, don't let the girls watch any videos by Prince or Madonna OK?" "Ok" Then he would take off to work and we'd be like "Mom can we rent Graffiti Bridge?" "Sure let's go!"

They used to listen to Prince cuz I'd force them to. They liked some of it, but not most of it. I was riding around in the car with my mom 2day and she was playing that 1st Macy Gray CD...I like her for about 2 sec's then it was over. I HATE THAT CD!!! I opened my big mouth and asked my mom 2 chage it. I should stayed quiet cuz the next CD was Kenny Rogers singing a bunch of covers. It went from bad 2 worse.

Funny topic
My mom listened to country when I was growing up...old country, Kenny, Waylan, Dolly, Loretta...etc. I discovered Prince on my own, with a help from a close friend who offered to pay for us to see Purple Rain. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I honestly have NO idea where I got my good taste in music from. My parents are both in their late fifties. My mom listens to crappy Jesus/ Christian rock shit. and my dad, I think he listens to country on the radio. They don't really buy cds or anything. When I was younger they listened to John Denver, Peter Paul & Mary, Donny & Marie Osmond from what I remember.
A couple weeks ago I was about Prince to my Dad and asked if he even knew who Prince was. He said, Yeah the guy that was in The Color Purple. BTW, my brother also has completely different musical tastes from me--he's all about heavy metal like Korn, System of a Down and Linkin Park. I'm all about the funk & soul. [Edited 1/31/06 17:46pm] The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Well...my 11 year old sister says it's gay music! My mom tolerates. My step-dad is forced 2 listen 2 it when I'm at home! My step-brother survives!
Still my sister only likes Madonna and Kylie! [Edited 1/31/06 17:50pm]

Amazingly, my parents don't get down to Pussy Control or Head. In fact, I'm afraid my mom likes church music and my dad, well, French records. He did like Pink Floyd in the 70's but that's about it. No wait... they both like Leonard Cohen and Joan Baez, for chrissake.

mum = cliff richard, dad = Neil Diamond. Mum used to say "I dont mind what you listen to, so long as you use headphones when listening to that silly irish man singing sunday bloody sunday, why does he have to swear?"
Its a wonder I'm not musically scarred for life.

My dad listens to "Purple Rain" and once had it on his Walkman as he was digging the garden - I looked out of the window at one point and saw him playing a guitar solo on his shovel. He doesn't like any other Prince stuff though - he prefers Elvis and Mike Oldfield.

My parents absolutely do NOT listen to Prince...
Mum's 47 (just like P) and she loves Pink Floyd (well, so do I), The Beatles, The Who, Eric Clapton, Queen and Billy Joel My dad is 48, he used to love Deep Purple but now he digs Stars of the Opera, André Rieu (Uuuaaaaagh!!!) and Phil Collins I sum up - taste obviously does NOT come with the genes "Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies -
tongue-tied and twisted, just an earthbound misfit, I"

My mother and father are aware of Prince and how much I like him. But they really don't pay much attention to him. From what I know my father is into jazz. My mother is strictly R&B, Soul. They will talk about him to me cause they know I like him. But neither one of them has any of his music.
I remember when Purple Rain first came out, I'm sure that I must have seen it about 50 times. Just so that I would have another reason to see it, I BEGGED my mother to go. I finally wore her down, but I remember her leaving the house with a plastic cup filled with wine and her drinking it while watching the movie (I was about 16 at the time and had my drivers license). I guess that was the only way she could tolerate it. She really liked Morris Day but didn't think much of Prince.

They both like Prince. They happily dance on his music too.
My father is a fan of Marvin Gaye, Motown, Luther Vandross. And we are french, jews and I think it rocks !!! They both can dance and I love it, especially rock'n roll (they're kinda fat) My mother loved Voices and songs you can sing on (Edith Piaf...). We couldn't stand in the car if she was beginning to sing. Now, she likes Mano Negra, hates Eminem. My sister is 17 and they both LOVE to sing the latest hits together.
