With You - How would you rate it as a classic? I really, really love this song. I find it quite short but it was the first Prince song that I found myself listening to over and over again.
DO some people find it too sentimental and sweet or do people generally find it sincere? I always think of it as simillar to "Adore" but in a rather more under-stated way. What do other people think ?? Shut up already, damn. | |

It's one of P's best ballads simply cuz it's innocent and sincere. The song would have been a HUGE hit if say Journey or REO Speedwagon had released it. It should have been a single for P. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I can't work out why I like it so much...
Maybe because it's not particularly about sex but about the joy of just being "with" someone. Plus I love the opening lines: I've held your hand so many times But I still get the feeling I felt the very first time I think it's really touching. It seems to say so much whilst saying so little. It sums up the depth of feeling you can have for somebody just by touching their hand. It's that first rush of excitment that you have. The anticipation. I think its strength is in the fact that is doesn't try to be a power ballad. Less is more.

Also I think it's a really mature song considering he was very young when he wrote it.
It seems to sum up about a million things in a relationship in one little song. Plus the fact that it sounds unfinished just adds to its charm. Shut up already, damn. | |

Journey and REO Speedwagon were great "arena" rock bands from the 70's and 80's. U had to have heard some of Journey cuts like "Open Arms", "Don't Stop Believing", "Faithfully" which Neal Schon's guitar solo TOTALLY inspired P's solo in Purple Rain. for YEARS i didn't think much of it but over the past couple of years i've come to revisit and revalue it, which is something i love when it happens naturally. it's not his best album, but it's a great debut. i like to think of it as aural comfort food - it's great to play when i'm just bummin' around the house. | |
