Eye just wanted 2 c what it was like 2 write in Prince-speak 4 a while...

What eye want 2 no is... r u guys who write like this really serious?

It takes about ten times longer 2 write in Prince-speak, it looks really stupid and it is almost impossible to read.

So, tell me... why do people write in Prince-speak?

Because they r cool like me, IceNine. Only cool people will make the attempt 2 write like Prince. Eye no EYE am cool.

It does look xtremely stupid, but who cares?


I don't even think it looks good when Prince does it.

icenine it did at first.but about five years ago i started
a new job where i had 2 use as few letters as possible.so
the prince writing is natural 4 me now.i use I instead of EYE though.if it bugs peeps i will try 2 type normal
but this is alot easier 4 me(plus i can't spell)

Or maybe it's because it gives, what would be normal words,more meaning. For instance, has a deeper meaning than a regular 'I'would read. Maybe that's why Prince uses it. That's very cool then, O.K that's what it is.

What's it matter? I used to use "Princespeak" (stopping short of "Eye" which isn't shorthand) and now just occasionally use it for making notes.

I was with it when Prince 1st started using the "basic form" of "Princespeak" (aka "Princebonics")..
like him, I also used
"2" = to, two & too
"4" = for
"u" = you
& I used those 3 forms for many years.

Of course, as we all know, Prince has expanded "Princespeak" to the point where it's almost a whole other language needing it's own dictionary. When it got that big-
& as I lost my personal connection to him (as he is now) I stopped using the "basic form" of Princespeak.
Now, I write using the boring, predictable, easy to read

STANDARD US ENGLISH.

This return to English also coincided with my entry into the ESL/EFL profession- where speaking & writing standard English is MANDITORY.


For better or worse, it seems like P gets the "credit" for starting this whole (mis)spelling thing which of course has caught on with a majority of the hip-hop community..

I can't remember the last time I saw ANY hip-hop song title that was correctly spelled (by standard English standards);
I ALWAYS see: "playaz" "niggaz" etc.


Even though Prince has been using Princebonics for several years now, it's still hard for me to read it or follow it; I often have to read the text twice to make sure I understand it.. if I'm really tired, I often don't even take the time to read it, because I know it'll take more time than I want to spend to read that text..


What should be remembered is that there is a WHOLE PLANET with many Prince fans, whose 1st language is not US English.. imagine what it must be like for them, to have to decipher "Princebonics"...

and was slammed by a few teachers here (who exposed me as the grammatically inept "fam" that I am) as well as those who hate all Prince related shit (yet, continue 2 come here on a daily basis).

As I stated b4, I choose 2 write like this here, not at work or in any way outside of this site, simply cuz I can.

I don't write "eye" or "" becuz it takes longer, I prefer 2 use the 2's and the 4's just 2 save time.

I really don't feel it's nice or productive in this site 2 slam folks for writing a certain way...if u wanna write in Princebonics, great...do it. If u don't like it, don't do it. It's that simple.

In my personal opinion, writing in that fashion is actually pretty cool. U can xpress urself in a way that gets a reaction 4rm other people. Eye personally use such Prince-speak in my own writing and eye have a friend who also uses such writing. This type of writing will only continue 2 keep bothering u if u let it...SO GIVE IT A REST!!!

Consider it another language...like Pig Latin. How many non-English people can understand Pig-Latin!

It's not cool...It's not expression. It's annoying.

When you typed "You can xpress urself in a way that gets a reaction 4rm other people." What the hell is 4rm? Forum? Form? From? That makes absolutely no sense.

I will admit, I don't even like it when people say "U." People act as if it's a lot of exertion to type two extra characters. I don't use all of the Prince-bonics and shorthand, and I can type just as fast as people who do.

Prince-bonics is a sucky alteration of the English language... I do agree with whoever said that the original version of Prince-speak was not nearly as annoying... just using 2 instead of two, U instead of you and stuff... that was not as bad.


Using the following types of Prince-speak just plain sucks:

"2gether" instead of "together"
"xclusive" instead of "exclusive"
"4rm" instead of "form"
"r" instead of "our" or "or"
etc, etc...

Once again, it is just my opinion, but I don't like it...
