Someone sang a Prince song at the American Idol auditions! I'm sure it happens all the time, but they just never air those auditions, but tonight on Jay Leno, Cowell and Co. were on and they showed some bad auditions. One girl was singing "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore?" It was the end portion, where it goes, "Why on earth can't you just pick up the phone, you know I don't like to be alone."
Pretty cool, eh? It would be nice to hear a full version of a Prince song during the competition, but you know that will never happen. But it would be cool if it did. |

I hate hearing people butcher Prince songs
Last time I was at my weekly poker game someone mentioned Prince and the guy across the table from me started howling "Adore" just for me. Needless to say his strategy worked. I got annoyed and distracted and started playing horribly

I think one of the contestants at Australian Idol performed the same song during in the finals or something. Wasn't too bad but I think she only had listened to the version of Miss Keys. I think you can see the performance on youtube.com or something (Little Richard enters the stage)

On the UK program X Factor - a sort of spin off from Pop Idol - this guy sang Kiss - This guy - Chico - was a bit of a sensation because he was sooooo bad and yet so entertaining !!! lol | |

In Belgium the winner of X-faktor did Kiss and it was a good
version 4 a change. In previous selections one girl also sang "How come U don't call me..." and she mentioned P and Alicia.Anyway,sometimes those thing keeps the intrest in P going 4 the general public! Love4oneanother | |

Hey, In Germany there was a guy (a Metallica-James Hetfield-lookalike) who's singing 'Purple Rain' in the german 'American idol (Deutschland sucht den Superstar) on last weekend.
The 'critics' said it was the best song (on this 80ies-contest evening) [Edited 1/17/06 9:23am] |

Apart from Chico's rendition of Kiss on UK Pop Idol, a boy band did a credible version of When Doves Cry acapella with great harmonies. It got them through to the next round. It's hard to believe that with such a wealth of material to choose from with such diverse musical styles,his songs aren't covered more. Time is a trick.... | |

BTW, now that I read all of this, does Prince get any royalties from all these "talent shows" around the world? It seems that there has been a sudden burst of purple in the song selections! It seems that there has been a sudden burst of purple in the song selections! as far as i know, anytime someone plays or sings a song publicaly they are suposed to pay a fee to whoever owns the publishing. radio stations pay each time they play a song... and when a lame cover band does purple rain they are suposed to pay. and for sure when a song is sung on TV the pay. (you may remember the jokes from SNL and other shows about 'having to pay' when someone sang too much of a song) | |
