The Rainbow Children would've definitely earned my interest as a new fan and kept me for a few years at least. But besides that, there really hasn't been much in the past several years that is truly exciting or innovative enough to have made me (as a new fan) buy other works by him. N.E.W.S. and Xpectation are exceptions -- I really like these two as well as TRC. So, hmm... maybe I'd still be checking out this Prince guy if I were new to his stuff. Seeing his television performances like the NAACP '05, Rock N Roll Hall of Fame '04, and Grammy's '04 would've earned my respect for him as a great performer... but, where's the songwriter these days?

I _had_ to respond to this one because about a month ago I was telling my sister that I am more of Prince-of-old fan. I liked him when he was singing "Bambi" and "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and "Soft and Wet" and "I'm Yours" and "In Love" and "When You Were Mine" and "Uptown" -- you get my point.
I dance my butt off to those songs. And the slow songs "Adore" and "How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore" and the ones on the PRINCE album, I'm not hearing that from him anymore. I know people change and go in new directions, but I miss _that_ Prince. I miss "Computer Blue" prince. I watch Purple Rain and it's like a whole other Prince. The Dreaming Peasant

One thing to consider though... If you weren't already a fan would you have everheard "The Rainbow Children" at all? I don't recall hearing any of it away from my CD player, and it didn't exactly set the charts alight...

How can you say? If I wasn't a fan in the first place, I probably would never get to hear a lot of the harder to find stuff that I like (Judas Smile, Glass Cutter, Days of Wild, Sex Me Sex Me Not, SM Groove, etc.
Impossible to answer on those grounds. I did like Musicology.

"Musicology" would've hooked me. BTW, I totally agree with your statement about Nirvana ruining rock music. Rock used to be about having fun and getting laid until those guys came around.

Sorry I don't quite get the question. If I were 11 years old right now would I be a fan of Prince's current music... probably not. If for some unimaginable reason I had never listened to music in my life and at age 38 heard Prince's current music would I like it... probably. Since I hate with a passion damn near all the current stuff that's played on the radio or popular. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Probably not. Im not real sure how I would get introduced to his music. I hope I wouldve bought Musicology. Its just like trying to introduce him to a anyone else. Perceptions are hard to break. ICP&C wouldve helped me on my way though.
Great hypothetical. Well done. (Insert something clever here)

It depends on what I would be into right now...but frankly I wouldn't have bought Musicology if I weren't a fan already. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

No I am older and wiser now to get all girly over musical groups, also the new songs, as listenable as they are, are as original and quirky as his 80s stuff. The Prince of the 80s was a gimmick, the Prince of the 00s needs one and badly.
Just as well I discovered as he was going off his prime in the very early 90s. I agree with the 32 year old (I am 29 and a half) about the fact theirs a lot of substandard rubbish with drum machines and swearing that is being masqueraded as 'music' on the radio, and I would at least rank Cinna mon Girl above My Humps and 50 cents. 17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

Like most of you.. I would have to say no.
For one thing, they barely play him on the radio nowadays, so I wouldn't have any way to hear his stuff. And there really isn't anything "extra" about the music he's been putting out lately. If someone had suggested I check out Rave, for example, I would have wondered... who is this guy f***ing up Sheryl Crow's song? Part of the thing with Prince is that you already know how great he has been and is capable of being. So we pretty much accept, patiently, the stuff he puts out-- hoping that he'll strike gold once again. Even if he hits a stinker, we still check him out from the corner of our eyes -- cuz whatever it is will probably be okay. People who are just familiar with his new stuff don't have cause to give him a second glance. He hasn't earned their patience. It's funny. It's like Picasso when he got older... his stuff was just passable, but the world couldn't wait to see his black paint on canvas. Those not in the know were just like... so we've got an old guy putting black paint on canvas.. what's the big deal? Got me? Come here, babe.. yeah...

if his new stuff were easily available and accessable i'd fall in love with prince. he's older but it's the little things that he does, i can't describe it come through his new music, it's in his blood. his new songs fill-in that tiny little gap and it's also a bridge. good music these days for me is enjoyable vocals. other good music simply motivates me to express myself through dance. as long as the music doesn't remind me of classical music, i usually tune into it easily. Absolutely categorically NOT. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

Since his music has been sold without hype and airplay, i would have to say Prince who?....But, it would only take one bite of a good hook and i'd be caught! You do go back and learn more about the artist that you appreciate...and then i'd fall in love all over again.

Too difficult for an old fan to be objective at this point.
Better to ask someone who got into him in the 90' or 00's.

I had to think long and hard about this question. It is difficult to say. If I had never heard of Prince (can you imagine) and some one dragged me to on of his concerts today I would automatically be intrigued and drawn to his music...because his performances are amazing live. How new is new?? If I saw Te Amo Corazon on t.v. today without ever knowing of Prince then I think I would enjoy the song but not be moved to be the hardcore fan that I am today. But if I first heard a Prnce song from Emancipation or Chaos and disorder I would still be very much a fan.

See, it's wierd.
I was gettin off on the topic of bootlegs on another thread, and sometimes I wonder if I would have STAYED as interested in Prince if I'd never heard the raw (unoffical) and fuzzy demo of "Computer Blue", the stripped down funk of "G-Spot", the garbled jazz of "Large Room With No Light", the slinky sexiness of "Wonderful Ass" or the sheer delight of knowing that Prince, Ron wood and Sting once shared the stage togehter in Wembley. Truth be told, the bootlegs kept me hungry and wanting more. They made me feel like I knew something that nobody else knew - that the dude could SHRED a guitar, funk you up sideways and throw away shit that would chart for anyone else who could do it. Except no one else could. I sensed that from the beginning and I'm STILL right.

based ONLY on the new music... no, i dont think so
but, you see... we are a group of older fans that fell in love with his music from back then, it cannot be expected that we would get into him the way we did back then, since to US, this is not HIM.... or at least the HIM we got hooked on. does that make sense ? i like the music when he was 'hungry' to get out there... you know, before everyone and their grandmother knew who prince was. he was like a rare found treasure at that time for me. i could relate to the words he was saying, the feelings he expressed, and the music was hot !!!! its just not the same im afraid.... but, i still the guy, he earned my respect long ago, and he will always have a fan in me. One of the best days of my life... http://prince.org/msg/100/291111
