Depends on which new stuff you're talking about... TRC, no... Musicology or Rave, probably so...

I probably wouldn't be because I usually discover new music through tv and radio and around here Prince didn't get that much airplay. So probably wouldn't even know him.

Absolutely not. It lacks originality and is too derivative.

That's a really interesting question.

I think I would still be interested in him as a person, but I wouln't get so excited about his music.
Shut up already, damn.

Anxiety

I don't know. It's too difficult to wrap my mind around that scenario without taking the older stuff into account. Plus, it's not an entirely fair question, since his later stuff is "softer" because he has nothing more to prove and he's already made a comfortable living for himself with his music.

So yeah, I don't know.

i'd probably dig out his older stuff eventually... based on his reputation more than on his new music.

that's what happened to me with stevie wonder or p-funk stuff years ago...

wow that's a hard question. I got into P because he was so innovative, unafraid and cute lol I don't know if I would take the time to wade through all the other stuff now. I am lazy in my old age and I tend to hold out on supporting the new artists that come out, they have to spark me like Erykah did,or I don't really care to listen to them evolve. I don't know that P could do that for me now, I don't know that I have the energy to wait for the evolution.

You know what? This is a good question.

I myself am really picky with my tastes of music today. If I had never listened to prince, I probably still wouldn't. He's not mainstream at all nowadays.

I'm 32, and I don't even listen to the radio much because of all the crap that's on. I listen to what I've always listened to and I seriously doubt I would suddenly, at my age, get into the music scene from scratch. I'm just too used to listening to music and musicians on long terms, not just for a few weeks as disposable acts. And lets face it, this is what we have nowadays.

Among new acts, and the current scheme of how new acts come, make a quick buck, and are discarted quicly, Prince does not measure into this equation. He is a blip on the screen. And that's because he has logevity on his side.

If I was younger, I'd look for what is hot at the moment. We all did this as teenagers. Prince is not hot at the moment. Prince is around, but he is not the hot ticket. Even during Musicology. For such a "comeback" album, the ones that really made that album big were his older audience as opposed to the new younger ears.

So the answer for me either way is no. If I was just getting into music as a 32 year old, I seriously doubt I would look into music enough to search out Prince and his back catalog. If I was younger, I would probably continue to stick with the Top 40. Either way, the answer is no.

I can say this. I'm glad I'm not a teenager in today's music scene. I can appreciate artists for their longevity and ability to change with the times. This is what is endearing about Prince for me. How unfortunate for the vast majority of the youth out there today who will not be exposed to such great talent as Prince.

Don't take shots at me, I said most of the youth, not all.

Very well said. I don't know about the cute part and all...but yeah, as a listener of P's music since '81, I would have to concur.

I have to agree with you. When I first started listening to Prince was with his first album. The music scene is sooooo different. There were disposable acts in the 40's and 50's too (Now, please don't say that I was around back then, because I wasn't. I just remember what my parents told me, okay? lol lol lol ). Anyhoo, the musicians in the 50's were singers who were dealing with live bands when they toured, even the ones who only got one or two hits. Nowadays, it is so different. I am thinking about that cat Mystikal (the dude that is doing time in the pen), and I can only remember one song that he did that was a big mega hit for a moment. When Mystikal came out, everyone was just hyping this poor fellow acting like he was the new king on the rap throne. Disposable music. No longevity, no real history. At least, Prince has history and achievements.

But, to be honest, I don't know if I would be into Prince if I didn't like the way he started over 29 years ago.....and the sad thing is....I remember it so well! lol lol lol lol

If his career started with the stuff he's doing now--doubtful. Not to say he hasn't done some decent stuff recently--I really like The Slaughterhouse--but if it weren't for old funky Prince, I'd still be a fairweather fan.
In general I don't listen to the radio/current music and I actually prefer older music--50s, 60s, etc. (I think because there weren't many options of radio station where I grew up and every Saturday night when I was out driving around my choices were either heavy metal pirate radio OR Golden Oldies.

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Probably not , but then his new music really doesnt get any exposure anymore in the UK , I saw Musicology once on The Box and that was it , and if I wasnt a fan that alone would never have drawn me into exploring his older music . Saying that, I'm not an old Prince fan from the 1980s , it was his early 90s music that drew me into becoming a huge fan , and a lot of the really old fans would say that period wouldnt draw them into becoming fans either I'd guess.

Though only 19 (20 in August) I started getting into Prince when I was 11 and liked him before then so I would like to think I have a right to answer this one.

If I am permitted to answer I'd say no I wouldnt be into him if I'd only heard his more recent stuff. Its okay but it doesnt strike me like his older stuff has.
JaneyPoos used to be it... then they changed what it was. Now what I am isn't it and what is it is strange and frightening to me...
