Prince & U2: Is There Bad Blood? On one of the Celebration threads...(Sadly, I wasn't there, so I must quote!), the following statement was made:
...At one point he was singing and he said "I LOVE U TOO, but not the band" so people were like HUH???
So he stopped and said... HMMM I don't think anyone got it... lol so here it goes " I LOVE U2 but not the band" Now, I know Prince is not one of U2's biggest fans, but I was wondering, when did he start disliking them? I think it might have been back when "Sign 'O' The Times" was up against U2's "The Joshua Tree" 4 best album at the Grammy's. Prince was up 4 about 4 awards that night and came home empty handed. U2 pretty much swept the awards that night. After winning, Bono was accepting his award and spoke; mentioning Prince in his speech. I think he referred 2 Prince as a "great storyteller", and I believe it was meant as a compliment, referring 2 his work on SOTT. Later, Prince spoke 2 reporters ( can u believe it?) and made the statement: "If I wanted 2, I can play anything they've (U2) done...but can they play 'Housequake'?" Which is probably a pretty accurate statement, imo. So I ask u...is there really bad blood? What r ur thoughts? |

Didn't Bono come onstage during the mid-90s to play The Cross with Prince?
I think Prince was just making a little joke...

It always seemed to me that he was trying to differentiate between the band U2 and saying "you too"...especially considering he's performed with Bono at least once after that. I never got the feeling there was any bad blood on either side. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

It was pretty STIFF competition that year for ALBUM OF THE YEAR... -SOTT -Joshua Tree -Jacko-'Bad' -Whitney H-'Whitney' -L.Ronstadt/E.Harris/D.Parton-'Trio' What a great year! Prince's best album ever nominated...U2's other landmark album (after 'Unforgettable Fire')...Whitney when she was then known as the Princess of Pop (not the Crackhead of Pop)...a huge Jacko album (not spectacular though)...and TRIO one of my all time country favs! personally i thought he was referring to some people that kept clamoring to be upfront and as he later stated "trying to go home with a married man" or something like that. i just thought he meant he loved whoever was screaming but that anyone trying to get with the band to get to him was mistaken, could have been wrong though. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
when i'm alone in my room, i keep dreamin about u

No, if you listen to the classic boot of the Prince aftershow at the 'Pod' in Dublin Ireland [CHRIST I FORGET WHAT YEAR IT WAS!!], Prince gets Bono on stage and they sing the Cross - and Prince says that we are lucky to have Bono around. I think he has a respect / healthy competition with them. someone tell me quick what year it was cuz it'll bug me all day.

Prince and U2 have a strange history. Bono has always professed a huge admiration for the Purple one, The Edge went on record stating that the song "Lemon" was U2's attempt to do a Prince-style tune, and Larry and Adam have both said kind words about him.
Prince, on the other hand, has said both positive and negative things about U2. After SOTT lost out to the The Joshua Tree , Prince did state that he felt he had done the superior record. A 1993 issue of Musician had a feature on Prince and the NPG, where the author noted that Prince seemed to have a "burr up his butt" about U2, viewing them as major rivals. Of course, in 1995 Bono joined Prince and The NPG on stage, and P stated that the world was "lucky to have him", or something to that extent. Prince has also professed his respect for Bono's work to eliminate third-world debt, and stated that he wished he could get Bono to free up some time to help with his fight for artists rights (Prince is probably unaware of the fact that Bono has actually done some campaigning for this) Ultimately, their doesn't seem to be any real "bad blood". Prince seems to think he got gyped for SOTT, but otherwise he just seems to view them as friendly rivals. In the end, Prince has had a fairly positive influence on U2, at the very least: At a concert stop last year, Bono told a story from the stage concerning P. He said a few years before, he had asked Prince why he was scrawling "Slave" on his face. Prince explained the situation with his fight to get his master tapes back, and asked Bono if he owned his. Bono, of course, did not. This conversation stayed with Bono, and when U2 came up for contract re-negotiations, their management made sure that they got all their master tapes returned to them. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

March 30, 1995 I think people are just reading too much into all of this. I agree Javed that Prince showed respect for Bono that night (despite the fact he seemingly forgot the lyrics to The Cross too!!!). If there was such bad blood supposedly, it seems unlikely that Prince would have wanted BOno on the stage. Moreover, the comments in 1987 when U2 won the awards (which incidently June 7 appears to be paraphrasing despite the fact they have been put in quotation marks) appear to have been made to highlight Prince's songwriting diversity rather than to criticise U2 per se. It was understandable how it came across, however. Similarly, Bono is on record in 1985 at Live Aid, Wembley, as specifically saying that he was sure Prince supported charitable causes generously, despite the bad press Prince was receiving for not attending the We Are The World performance and only sending the '4 The Tears In Your Eyes' video for broadcast at Philadelphia. ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

Maybe Bono's ridiculous hobnobbing with Corporate America (and that god-awful superbowl performance), rubs Prince the wrong way. "Gravity isn't just a law, it's a good idea."

Actually, Prince said the "I love you too, but not the band" statement again last night and followed it up with, "Bono's cool" and something else. Anyone else remember?

There is a big similarity between The Cross and a song of U2.
When U listen 2 the intro of The Cross and that song (of which I forgot the name, but i think it was a single in the year 1988 or 1999) U can hardly hear the difference of the guitar-line. The similarity is very big!

Prince is an egotistical schmuck. I mean, he's really a very excellent musician, but he should just quit talking. ---------------
