"Magic of the Music"- Now vs. Then I first discovered Prince probably 10 years ago, but only had Purple Rain and the Hits 1 and 2, until Musicology came out. I bought the album the day it came out, and went to the tour. After then I was hooked. I bought every album except about 3 that he made, and started listening to them from For You-on, chronologically. I LOVED these albums and discovering the new music and stuff. I would spend maybe 2-3 weeks on one then move to the next, and still rotated them all in my listening. Well after I got ATWIAD, I moved and took a big break from music for a few months, but have since started up again. I just finished D&P, but have had little interest in moving on to Symbol, mainly because I usually like to listen to music (esp. for the first few times with a Prince cd)at work with headphones, and I am laid off for 9 weeks.
My question is, do you feel like the magic of the music has become kind of lost, because you have heard it too much? I just don't get that feeling anymore listening to the music. There are some select songs that will do it every time, however. Have any of you felt like this, and does it go away? Its been awhile since I listened to one for the first time, so maybe I will feel it all over again with each one. But I am entering the mid-90s now . I still cannot stay away from this site and am a hardcore fan, but I think you know what I mean.

Not really, 'cause I'm careful now to move on to other artists when I realize I'm starting to play out Prince's back catalogue.
I go through different phases with my music. Sometimes I'll be in a Radiohead phase, and other times it's Stevie Wonder, or Pink Floyd, or maybe Roger Waters' solo stuff. Once I eventually return to Prince's best albums, they still feel as powerful as ever. Another fun thing I'll sometimes do is just listen to Prince's weaker albums, like NPS or TRC. Then when I return to albums of his I love, like Purple Rain or 1999, I have a newfound appreciation for their magic. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

It has never gone away for me. I have been listening to Prince's music since Soft and Wet, when it originally came out. When I go back over the old stuff it takes me back to where I was then, young and carefree. There was a time when I just could not listen to one of his albums. I bought it, but never opened it til 2 years later. Emancipation. I was hatin' on Mayte then. That's when I got lost in my BEATLES collection. So it's been about 8 years since I got over that and never has the music lost the magic 4 me. " a newborn child knows nothing of destruction, nothing of love & hate"

I suppose I'm kind of like PurpleKnight in the respect that I go through phases...I might have a heavy Prince phase one month, the next it could be Joni Mitchell, etc... and there's plenty of associated artists so I can still get my Minneapolis Sound fix without having to play 1999 over and over again.
I only ever tired of Prince once since 1985 and that was when TRC was released. Those lyrics were just too depressing and narrow-minded for me, so I took a break. ...and I shouldn't worry about listening to the mid-90's stuff. I enjoyed the album, Come, and The Gold Experience as much as anything from the 80's and before.
