Man, this dead horse is getting beaten AGAIN?.
1. D'Angelo doesn't owe Prince anything. Prince wasn't there in the studio recording D's songs; D was. He earned his place in music. Regardless of what you fanatics think as to how much influences played in that, when it all comes down to it, Prince didn't record one note of D's music and deserves no credit whatsoever in that area. NONE.
2. Respect your influences? He already has on several occasions. You fanbots are obsessed with a couple of comments he's made here and there but he's never straight out bashed Prince publicly. I'm wondering how Beck would be bashed (if at all) if he'd have said the same things? rolleyes
This whole thing is as gargamelgibson said, "a mountain out of a molehill". You Prince Nazis want the whole world to bow down and declare prince king of all music just because you have done so. Get off it, already. People have opinions. They have rights to them. D is no exception. All he said was basically he dug the old Prince stuff more than the newer stuff. SO F*CKING WHAT?! Big deal. Get over yourselves running to Prince's defense as if he needs it. It seems like people are waiting around for some sort of public apology or something. That's not gonna happen. When all is said and done, both of them are recording artists. Enjoy the music and quit bitching about NOTHING.

just like I suspected. So interpreted that means he could get Prince back to where he thought he should be? lol

I think Scrapluv was right... I should give up too.

"I wanna see him go there again..." It's not that wild an interpretation to say this is D'angelo talking about where he thinks Prince should be.

lol are you serious? I said the exact same shit about prince around that time. do I owe prince an apology? hell no!! i felt the music he was making then was lame as hell and didnt have any edge. guess that makes me disrespectful right? hell, look at the main board and you'll see the same thing from orgers and quakers. remember, prince was making records like rave at the time neutral . d'angelo/?uest are as much fan as any orger (in fact, i know for a fact ?uest has an org name and has posted on this board numerous times). for them to say "i really wanna work with prince and see him get back to his raw funk shit" is echoing the sentiment of MANY prince fans. i really didnt get back into him until the rainbow children record. hell, people STILL angry at prince for quitting cursing and singing nasty lyrics.

From those quotes it does seem D'Angelo was a little full of himself, but I doubt he was intentionally trying to disrespect Prince. With Prince's output at the time compared to D's it's understandable. Give me a Casio and I can't do much worse than NPS. biggrin

Maybe it's not true but I'd like to think that D'Angelo, Questlove or somebody put "a fire under Prince's ass" to make TRC. Maybe it was just pride because deep down he had to know NPS and Rave are mediocre at best.

Anyway, D'Angelo has the right to say whatever he wants about Prince but if he's supposed to be your boy, not to mention somebody you respect, don't call him out in public. These are the things you either keep to yourself or talk to the person themselves and leave it at that.

I think D's problem is/was that he was trying so hard to be the next Prince instead of trying to become the 1st D'Angelo.

Regardless to what you old-timers think, he became a symbol of a resurgance of real soul music to the 90s generation while Prince was bullshittin' around releasing music only his fans were diggin'.
No one can take that from D and no one can take credit for doing it BUT D. He was the 1st D'Angelo.
Now he needs to get off his fat azz and drop something new. lol
