Mountains 12" Extended

One of the classic "extended versions" on 12".... those were the days when getting hte 12" meant you were practically getting a whole new song.

Just like the Kiss extended, Mountains becomes an entirely new song the whole second half.

It's like funky big band if that makes anysense. Some great horn solos and I think a synth lead solo i'm guessing by Dr. Fink at the end.

The percussion is really cool too. I wonder if Sheila is doing that percussion stuff.... it sounds like Prince is playing the regular drum kit (vs the Linn throughout the regular version), but some of the percussion fills, especially that high pitched cymbal, sound very Sheila like to me.

I feel you on this one! I would rush to the Record store when I knew that Prince was dropping a 12". Heck I was so bad I would buy the 7" and the 12" and put them on tape and drive around town with te songs playing...Ahh, those were the days. My favorite 12" was "America" I still get geeked up when I play that song.

I love the extended band jam at the end, with the drums and such. One of my favorite 12" songs. I love it!

I used to buy the singles, and I didn't have a turn-table. I grew up not being able to afford to buy this stuff regularly until after I turned 18, so when I got the chance, it didn't really matter if I had the equipment to listen to it on - if someone had a record player, I would use theirs. I did this with the singles for Kiss, Mountains and Sheila E's Hold Me. It was just important for me to be able to hold in my hand.

Oh those were the good old days -- 1980s through early 1990s with 12 inch vinyl. This particular 12 inch is slammin', and I definitely love the coda at the end - the symbol crash from Bobby's drums.

Amazing extended version. I just want to know that why does the song fade off just before the end, only to bring it back on for a few seconds more for the finish?

The extended versions are cool, but they can drag and become overly repetative at times.

I can rarely listen all the way through.

And it was such a joy, when I attended my 1st Prince concert in 1986.
I was 17 (maybe my 1st time in a big city...Hamburg) and afterwards in a cool disco,club.

There they played Mountains, the 12" which I just bought recently.

Cool 2 hear it in a loud way @ the club.

There is a moral there.

One of my FAVORITE songs of all time...this one...the extended version. I must have listened to this about 10,000 times since 1986 and still jam to it when I listen. This and the extended Computer Blue are THE quessential Prince & The Revolution songs for me.

I am almost positive I read somewhere that Sheila played drums on the extended...but don't quote me...I can't remember specifically. It sure sounds like her tho.

Yes, those were the days... Also recall the extended versions of Love or $, La la la He he hee, Shockadelica, and Hot Thing being quite funky as well.

Looking back, I have to wonder if many of the b-sides and extra beats were "inspired" by all of the talented associates Prince surrounded himself with at the time??
