Well, here we go. You really have to see the "3 Chains Of Gold" video collection to really get it. First of all this song was intended to be a part of that opera he never finished. Quick summary: Some girls he meets (the princess of Cairo or whoever) witnesses her father being murdered by 7 men over some special 3 chains of gold. She has them and gives them to P. Now, the men want the chains, so they come after her. The rest is tricky. Being in Dance I interpreted the music as: she dies at the point when he talks about wanting some "inspiration, but I didn't have any dreams" and then says "If one of us has a date with undertaker which will it be?" and then her spirit comes back and tell him to "give back the chains. If you don't you'll die. Nothing shall come between you and I" and then the dramatic end is him killing himself or being killed, not sure...of course I could be WAY off on this...

Could be the transition he's been going thru. It seems that everything he does has had a previous message. Maybe he was thinking for the future.

Just a thought.

There is no real significance to the lyrics of this song.
Prince just wanted to sound portentous!!!
