the November 1982 Arkansas show. Can't recall the exact date,I'll have to find it and check. This show is explosive! Prince is in such a great mood. It's the "1999" tour and he kicks ass.Opens with "Controversy",then "Let's Work" and "DMSR".

Probably not got as many as some folks, but I do like a lot of the Musicology ones.

Haven't got any Lovesexy shows, which is a real bummer as I love that Tour - I tried pulling the Music from my Video player through the PC but it doesnt want to play at the moment sad

Well for me Lovesxy is just that bit more special because at the time I didn't know that much about Prince. (Gets all misty eyed.....)

I had a bit of a whirlwind introduction to him. I started to like him around the time he released Lovesexy so I was working backwards...

Lovesexy introduced me to so many more aspects of Prince and his music.

It just totally wowed me.

I remember him performing Erotic City and I Wanna Be Your Lover and I was like...I must get those songs...where do they come from....?

It also introduced me to the songs from Dirty Minds like When You Were Mine, Head and Sister. And again I was blown away !

The only way I can describe it was that it was so entertaining and there is just so much to it.

Nowadays who could put on a show like that ?

Prince really entertained you. You couldn't take your eyes off him and he made you feel that you were part of the experience.

He really worked hard to put on that show. You can see that he's really enjoying it as it's infectious to watch someone like that.

Also there is nothing pretentious about him. He sings about love, religion and sex. At the time I thought that was pretty cool.

Thanks for that. I can see it's often a generational thing for most people and I definitelty relate with your sentiments regarding Lovesexy since I feel the same way about the Parade era gigs.

I have consigned the Wembley dates to my list of favourite concerts ever since Parade was the first Prince tour I witnessed. Those performances will forever remain indelibly etched in my subconscious as an unmatched bravura showcase full of astonishing surprises and peerless virtuosity.

.

Do you have the Lovesexy concert on DVD or Video ?
Shut up already, damn.

Indeed I have. The best document of this tour is Fullasoul's "Livesexy Uncut" DVD featuring the originally unedited TV broadcast, now enhanced with a splendid audio track which makes my DVD look and sound very expensive.

Given that the official version clumsily edits the "Intermission" interlude and the songs are presented in the wrong order the Fullasoul version effectively corrects all those anomalies.

Needless to say, "Livesexy Uncut" kicks the official release into a cocked hat.

Couldn't do a Top 10 really, but recent favorites are the 1982 gig at 1st Ave (Sexuality, Party Up, Head!), 1st Ave on August 3rd 1983 of course, Parade warm-up gig 03/03/86, Aftershow in Paris 1987, Emporium 1995...

Hey, I'm definitely feeling you on the 1982 gig at First Avenue. It was about time somebody mentioned a Controversy era concert and what better introduction to Prince's obscure one-off performances than this one?

It has everything a Prince one-off gig ought to be: raw, nasty, sweaty, unpredictable and above all funky as hell. The first live performance of "All The Critics Love U In New York" and a version that makes the album cut sound lame by comparison. Lasting almost 12 minutes it features a searing guitar solo throughout that threatened to set First Avenue alight in its intensity. Sue Ann Carwell joins P onstage for "Still Waiting" and P's screams just send shivers down your spine.
Personal highlight: Morris Day and members of The Time joining P onstage for rousing versions of "The Stick" and a tremendous "Partyup" finale, again with P tearing it up on guitar.

A real classic which definitely belongs in every serious Prince record collection.

.

I can't get enough of that one at the moment! Lots of interesting little details too, like the beautiful melody in the first verse of 'When You Were Mine'. Have you noticed that he sings more in his normal register than usual at that time and for those songs? Particularly 'Party Up'.

Certainly one to enjoy over and over again. It's quite timely that an enhanced version of this audio has just been released by a fan, complete with gorgeous artwork.

Another fave moment of mine is the exchange between P and Morris:

P: "So you still play the drums?"

Morris: "Here, take my comb. You could use it"

biggrin

It's a fan release, not the Thunderball version.

That should give you a clue.

I particularly enjoyed the 1993 August 1st aftershow at the Forum after the big
London Wembley Stadium concert. He played a set consisting of 90% new unreleased
(at the time) material. I remember him opening with 'Come', which was played
with the stage saftey curtain still down so the audience couldn't see the band.
Then the curtain went up and he launched into a funky version of 'Johnny'. I
can't remember the set list, but he definitely played 'Blue Light', 'Race',
'Loose!', 'The Ride' and a blistering version of 'Peach' during which Mayte
stage dived a couple of times. He then came back on for an encore of an
energetic version of 'House In Order', during which PRINCE STAGE DIVED! (the
only time I've ever seen him do it). What a night.

Unfortunately I can't say this show is circulating at all, Boris biggrin

However, the set list is remarkably similar to the aftershow played at The Rex in Paris just a few days later. This you can get on CD and features rare performances of "The Pope" and "The P".

Prince was on incendiary form that night.

My favorite (if I would HAVE to choose) would be his performance from Small Club. Just for his cover of "Just My Imagnination". I remember the first time I heard it, I literally had to pick my jaw up off the floor!!! eek

Best way to sample this, the third and last Dirty Dirty mind gig in Europe.

Prince might have played to one of his smallest audiences ever - a bunch of trendy nightclubbers, present via word of mouth - but this gig cemented his reputation in Europe as an explosive live act, combining the charisma of Iggy Pop with the guitar histrionics of Santana and the vocal gymnastics of Curtis Mayfield. An irresistible package and something astonished European audiences were definitely not yet ready for.

This Paris concert (Theatre Le Palace - 04 June 1981) is the only European show that circulates in both audio and video.

Spine-tingling moment: the "Dirty Mind" encore.

Indeed. But even though August 3 1983 was the better performance I just prefer to point to the lesser-known First Avenue '82 gig which was more slammin'.

Here's another awesome gig worth highlighting, if only because of the rarities that were played during the concert:
