Life O' The Party might be simplistic lyrically, but Prince has been writing lyrically simple stuff since day one. So what? Also, comparing it to When Doves Cry is like comparing an apple to an orange. "New Power slide...."

I don't knopw what it is.
When Doves Cry sounds real and sincere whereas Life O The Party sounds contrived and superficial. Lyrics like: Eye'm the life of the party 'Long as eye got Ur body Shakin' like a leaf on a tree Cutie come dance with me U and me, we got mad chemistry It sounds cheesy and false, like a sleezey bloke. "Cutie come dance with me" I'd probably hit anyone if they said that to me. It's really patronising. Shut up already, damn.

Sorry, but I'd put the lyrics and the feeling in "Reflection" up against anything Prince has ever done. I enjoy it just as much.

Are there particular lyrics that you like or don't like, think are funny, sad, rude, etc... i pay more attention to the music itself than the lyrical content, for the most part. the only time i care about lyrics is when i first hear a song, so i'll know how the song goes. I pay attention to both. The music on Musicology is dated. There's nothing special about it at all. Prince could get away with a song like Party Up in 81 because it was all new to the world. The sound, the look, hell everything about Prince back then was new and exiting.

For me comparing song lyrics isn't about feeling let down by Prince.
I suppose I believe that as the author of his own lyrics Prince is telling us something about himself. When I hear a lyric like "When you jumped on my D.I.C.K. That's the one thing that I don't play The jock strap was 2 big 4 u anyway U're just a simpleton I'll bust u like a pimple, son " I think they sound aggresive and harsh and I just wonder what's going through Prince's mind. Yes he has always wrote saucy provocative lyrics but they were more mischievious than offensive. It's like he turned himself into a parody of himself. It was like he could only write rude words and explicit lyrics. And he seemed to be only doing it for the sake of it. It sounds like someone who's living there life in some sort of movie. Who speaks like that in real life ?? Shut up already, damn.

when the title of a thread indicates, "proof" it could be perceived as such.. its a nice topic to partake in...just saying.... Yes he's discussing the lyrics as in evidence that Prince has lost his "genious" (note spelling - could catch on) !! It's up to us (the orgers) to say if we agree and disagree and for why . For example I have talked about "My Name Is Prince". And for example someone else might agree or disagree or just have something else to add. For example the thread could be "Proof that he still is a genious !!" And then people may agree or disagree using various points and arguments. Regarding lyrics this is probably one of the closest insights we get into someones mind I think. [Edited 1/13/06 16:00pm] Shut up already, damn.

well heres my 35cents....
Prince has matured - surely!! as have WE (mostly) he's still a jerk - he still has issues (but hell so do I/we) he put that antagonistic statement that he was ova cussing and being funky..well that was a CLUE... then the celebrations = religious hoopla... another indication...that he was willing to sacrifice the radicals (fans, yeah thats us, u diehard) for the sake of SAVING FACE... he was giving us the heads up that his funk has been purged - he has no more... per se what we are USED too.. its just not there... he doesn't live that life - those emotions - etc and so on... he's a middleaged artist tryin to find peace/piece... and he's mellow and lost that edge that hunger.. its a sad sorry day in hell... but i'm over it... but still there are many of us that keep HOLDING ON... ~Live Free ... Be Wyld~AlwaysOnlyMakeBelieve - LiveUrLyfe... laissez le bon temps rouler...vivre sans être sauvage...हमेशा ही बना विश्वास ~Change and do so CONSTANTLY...

In Don't Play Me he States these things.....I think there is some saying that goes about putting away Childish Things, however one can Still Love that stuff but play it Differently. Maybe just not Wild and Stuff and DOESN'T WANT ALL That LIFE as ALL THAT GLITTERS AIn'T GOLD. But, seeing him out and about in Hollywood and throwing parties he still is Fun and Cool. He is Not a DUD and Certainly NOT OVA or DEAD.... He just is Different and NOT INTO HIS LUSCHIVIOUS DIRTY MIND WAYS Especially since Mayte and The Baby Tragedy. That CHANGED HIM....UPSET HIM....DEVESTATEd The MAN.... He wasn't the Same ..... I wonder if the Boy lived and Mayte and him were together would he STILL have CONVERTED to JW? I Loved Mayte But in a way I wish he Never met her if she Devestated him Beyond Repair.....I am glad he is having fun and we should wish him Peace and Love.

What is the point? We are talking about OPINION here. Unlike the misleading thread title there is no, and never will be any, "proof" that Prince's genius has disappeared. So, I just stated my opinion as simply as possible. I like MNIP. I think the lyrics are at least as good as those of WDC. I really don't suppose that anyone here is going to change the opinion of anyone else. However... In fact, now that I've gone back and read both, I really don't see why anyone would choose WDC as evidence of any past greatness. The song itself might be a landmark because of the way it was performed/produced but the lyrics are pretty darn simplistic and not too darn far beyond "flowery poetry 102". There are far more interesting lyrics to look at in virtually any period of his output. [Edited 1/15/06 19:11pm]

Camille Paglia says that genius only comes from the wounded psyche, and to an extent I must agree with that.
Prince's psyche was considerably more wounded in this era. It's obvious and apparent he is happier since that time, and his best work (like TRC, IMHO) revisits the old times. That said, I like his recent output.
