Who wouldn't be jealous of Jesse's playing?

Jesse is a solid, solid player. A guitarist's guitarist. BMNS really impresses me, every time I spin it.

I have yet to hear Prince release a consistently jaw-dropping, guitar-based album.

(*insert obligatory compliment about Prince being a wonderful guitarist here*)

Yeah man, there's somethin' about a JJ solo that does it for me. I love it when Morris says, "cut 'em, Jesse"...

Bare My Naked Soul was just a straight up great guitar album. If you want to hear some cool guitar-based songs, this is the album.

Personally, I've always dug Jesse's guitar sound better.

I've always wondered who was better out of Jesse and Dez. I hate to compare because they're both awesome.

The good thing is having them both around made P get more into his guitar work and Prince stepped up. My friend Curtis played a track he did with Jesse on it and Jesse still sounds great.

Man, this shit has been beat to death with a big stick....Hell yes P was jealous of Jessie's talent and his image. It's quite a bit I can go into regarding this topic and have in past posts. J.D. can confirm this among others.

smile cool! I love this topic. Among his peers, meaning the Minneapolis scene, how did P stand up against Jesse, Sonny T, Dez?

How would he do today?

Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse; just always fascinated by the perception of Prince as a guitarist, versus the reality.

Imho, Dez and probably jesse too, would both be probably better than prince. I mean they concentrate more on just playing guitar (even tho jesse can play just about any instrument like prince).
Dez was a few years older than prince and by the time he met prince he had been gigging for at least 4-5 years. He was already a mature and seseasoned musician.

Prince is good, but no match for guys like Dez, too many people get caught up in the "hype".

Prince is much better than Dez and was as good as Jesse in the late 80´s. (Not in the early 80s) Nowadays Prince is definetely better.

I actually enjoy your thread topic. I was just thinking about JJ a couple of days ago when I heard the third The Time album where we really got to hear him play. I purchased Jesse Johnson's first two studio albums and thought they were fantastic. His melodies were a little redundant, but his guiter solos were very strong. I always thought of him as "the almost Prince," because out of every one in The Time, I felt that he had the talent, chrisma, and look, but I never figured out what kept him from achieving superstar status.

On the first two Time albums, I could tell it was P so easily, but the third album and his solo work really display the true (and up to that point hidden) talent of JJ.

If there are specifics on Jesse Johnson (like recording sessions, where is he now, etc.), please inform or start a related thread so it's not misleading.

Again, good post.

I don't know if he was jealous. But I honestly have to say that Jesse is better. There are things that Jesse can do that I don't think Prince can. But I do like both their styles.

i just never heard anybody inject so much feeling and soul into there playing as prince does on guitar. i think the other guys are definately more technical but if i want technical expertise, i'll go get my computer fixed. when it comes to art, i want soul and prince is unmatched in that area.

Early in his career Prince toned his guitar playing down to concentrate on all the instruments on his albums and the Time albums, so it looked as if Prince guitar skills weren't that great, but on all his records and the Time's it's all him. I'm sure that they all stole from each others techniques because they were around each other so much. Prince know can easily shred those guys up with his purple axe with one hand nowdays. It's not even a comparison if you ask me. If it was Prince's job just to play the guitar he would be better than he is now.

I think artistically, Jesse was the only real threat to Prince. Morris was cool. But his entire persona was basically mimicking Prince's dad. The guys in the Revolution all had talent coming out the wazoo. But none possessed Princ'e raw charisma. The only artists who did during that time was Jesse Johnson. I remember seeing the Time on Soul Train years ago. Don Cornelius asked the band to introduce themselves. Naturally Morris got applause, he's the lead singer. But the person who got the biggest reaction was none other than JJ. Morris even got a little jealous. After Johnson said his name to much applause, Morris had to interject: "I'm Morris and I'm still cool!" Jesse had presence and talent. If Prince wasn't jealous, he should've been...
