the guitar parts in "The Max" I only just noticed the background guitar that plays about 2:10 into "The Max" is the melody from "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic".
I wonder if Prince forgot that he had used it somewhere else when he decided to release "Rave"... [Edited 1/8/06 18:10pm] |

[Edited 1/8/06 18:10pm] Prince uses riffs from other tunes of his own quite a bit -- what you just found is another example of it. Others: Horns from "Rock Hard in a Funky Place" are played in the long instrumental part of "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" in the SOTT concert video 200 Balloons has "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic" chants all over it The horns from "Overnight Everynight" off Eric Leeds' "Times Squarred" album are nearly identical to the horns on "Xenophobia." I think of this practice as more of Prince's exploration process with various treatments of his own music than him "forgetting" he already used it on another track...not likely, I don't think. Right, but using something in a live version, a b-side, or productions for other artists is not the same as using the same riff in 2 of your own solo songs. I just think Prince probably figured that "Rave" would never be released when "The Max" was recorded and the Symbol album was put out. |

This could be what he means when he says, "Sample yourself..." | |
