Mental instabilities?
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.
You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

Prince fans appreciate "creative genius" and unique talent. Prince is a true showman and pretty much unparalled in his look and sound. Kind of like the musician's musician.

typing he is the king of individuality

I dunno. I like to think it takes good taste in music and an open mind to really appreciate Prince and his music, but judging from some of the regular Orgers....Prince attracts fucking lunatics. eek

Prince isn't your every day kind of guy; neither r the ppl who really dig him.
After listening to Prince since '83, I'm still amazed when ppl tell me they dig his music.

It's not like every other person digs Prince.

I agreed with you on that. I am not speaking for anyone, it seem likes the people who I KNOW dig Prince more are known by people as being noncomformist and eccentric. And the casual fans only like him in Purple Rain or his album and also like his popular songs like 1999 or Kiss. Again I am not speaking for all his fans.

1. I think that we are unique because we all bring a certain part into the whole Prince fan family, but other than that, not really.

2. Just love Prince and his music and you are a Prince fan. Plus, stand up for him when people are trying to diss him.

3. I became a fan of Prince because A). the man is cool. B). the brotha put our hometown on the map. Mary Tyler Moore is cool, but when you come from the same hometown as Prince it speaks loud and clear. C). I love his music. What he does for the MPLS community. And the fact that he still calls MPLS home. That says a lot about Prince.

Agreed cool . Does Prince really contribute alot to the Minneapolis area besides the music scene? If so, that's great! The man's great!

I agree with this totally. I know we like to think we're somehow more musically enlightened than the masses and it might actually be true. But Prince fans are all nonconformists -- we think outside of the box -- thrive on parardim shifts -- iconoclasts -- individuals. Most of us march to the beat of a different drummer and not easily susceptible to peer pressure. Prince is too, I think that's why he appeals to us so much. Then he really is a helluva showman. When I first saw Prince on that Sexuality video, he was like a superhero -- a radical departure from anything else I had ever seen or heard. This guy was different and was flaunting it. In a small way, I think all his fans are somewhat similar to him. (except I don't wear stiletto heels)

At the end of the day, it's about the music. you like what you like, i just wish there was respect across the boards for artists with true longevity and talent. it's hard to stick around and be relevant.

Flippancy (Sp?) towards such artists/bands sticks in my craw.

focus on the music, and if you're young and haven't vaguely researched a back catalogue, please do so before dismissing outright.

It's very tough to characterize Prince fans as a whole because his audience reflects his music in its variety. I would expect the fans to be more eclectic in their taste than people from a lot of other fanbases. As for the fans identifying with him that's not clear because after all who is Prince? Many things. I mean you don't go to a concert and find mostly small men with delicate feature and a napoleonic complex. Case in point, the guy behind me at the ONA concert was 6'3" and weighed maybe over 300 pounds. But you know what? He sang in falsetto -- loud! As for women and gay men objectifying him, I don't know... why don't you ask Zeleira?

So not much can be said. I was convinced at one point there was an higher prevalence of compulsive personalities, but then I met an MJ fan and felt much better about my fellow Princeheads. Those on the Org are a little bit wacky but in a nice way.
