I used to love those days of buying a Prince single with a flip side that I'd never heard before. I know some 'B-sides' have been released of late, but I guess I'm just old school, having the vinyl single in my hand, rushing home to play it for the first time...

She's Always In My Hair. This was out about the same time as Jesse Johnson's Free World b-side, and together, the two of them made the summer of 1985 a good summer for me. (And don't pelt me with tomatoes, but on MTV, they would always pair up Rasperry Beret with Kokomo by the Beach Boys, and I loved the two songs together)

Kind of depends on my mood, but I'd say Irresistible Bitch.

17 Days has that wonderful electropop feel and gloriously poignant lyrics. It's a perfect example of the work he did during the incredible period that preceded the release of Purple Rain.

However, Irresistible Bitch is a quintessential Prince song that also displays his multiinstrumentalism to full effect, especially the drumming and the bass, and it has the qualities of one of those Stax classics from the 60's, a perfect soul-funk concoction that can hang with the best.

Ultimately I have to pick Irresistible Bitch because I see Prince more as the inheritor of the great soul-funk traditions than a striking pop artist, although he is definitely both to a supreme degree.
