3121 countdown to the new.

I am sure most of you already realize 3121 will be unlike anything prince has done before. However I wonder, if you could have him revisit ONE albume to be a template for 3121, What would it be and why?

Please lets have a little more then one short responce here.

What albume and why would make a good template for 3121?
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.
You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

I'd say Sign of the Times because it's all there; the essential Prince.

Strong ballads, emotion.
Experimentation and musical display.
Songs ppl can identify with and dance 2; even cry 2.
A message that is universal and not dogmatic.

Purple Rain (duh!)

-or-

The Gold Experience, because it was hip-hop inspired without being too hip-hop. Prince just really brought it with the catchy hooks and story-like verses.

I instantly thought "1999" the album!
Its an upbeat album through and through...its an experimentation with all kinds of musical styles that hadn't been heard too often before.
Its not too far off and its defintely on beat!

There are only a few ballads and its Prince jamming with the band, or being the one man band genius he truly is!

I'd like to hear more orchestral effects and funky bass lines plucked like never before.

Prince has given us many great records from 1978 to Present and I know he's gonna give it to us on 3121!

So my choice would be "1999"...the title is also a group of numbers!
So perhaps it will have that same energetic vibe and futuristic sound!

I wholeheartedly agree. SOTT is the ultimate definition of Prince as a performer, musician, and artist. That album is timeless.

Yes. A while back on a Supa thread, I facetiously compared 3121 to 1999 with the following tracklist :

3121

3121
Little Red Lanctern
Religious
Let's Pretend We're Larry
DanceMusicSectRomance
Charismatic
Something in the Holy Water (Does not Compute)
Three? (No Trinity!)
Lady Cab Preacher
All the Mystics Love You in NY
Interdenominational Rover

But seriously, it's obvious to me 3121 is 1999 for the new Prince age.

I'm not convinced "3121 will be unlike anything Prince has done before" since all we've heard is one song. What has given you the idea it will be ulike anything prior? Cause I got the feeling he will be shooting for a commercial cd this time & that doesn't quite qualify as something unlike anything hes done before.
Plus you are building up your expectations for something that may not live up to your dreams.

I hope this album is kick ass! I know Prince does what he wants, but please: JAM! Get funky! Get rock and rolly if you want....but keep the ballads to a minimum. If you can bring out another Anastesia or 7 -- that would be even better! My favorite Prince album is 1999. That was the one that sealed it for me...made me a Prince fan for life. I hope 3121 continues in that tradition.

I say Parade

Over the last 5 years or so, his albums have been like little featurettes of his various talents (eg. ONA = the "piano" album, Xpectation = the "jazz" album, ONA Live = the "live" album, NEWS = the "group-improv" album, Musicology = the "old-school/songs" album).

That's all fine and dandy, but I'm hoping he now goes in a real experimental direction the way that Parade sounded totally different to the PR sound back in the day (I think ATWIAD was an extension of the PR sound in some ways). It would also be nice for him to re-explore that European/dry funk sound...

I'm not too worried either way. I pretty much like all of Prince's albums anyway!
