Loved this cut from the very first five seconds of the first time that I played it. That double up on the drum at the top, followed by that falsetto "hooooo", it just grabs you right away.
Incidentally, I seem to recall reading somewhere that the version of the song that we are all so familiar with was about Susan Moonsie. Don't know the certainty of the claim but it was printed in something. | |

The reason is that Private Joy was the last song recorded for CONTROVERSY. Although it existed before as a song called "Dear Uncle George", the version that made it on the CONTROVERSY album was tracked on Sunday August 16, 1981 at Sunset Sound. The session was scheduled to start at noon, but the actual recording didn't start until 7:15 P.M. Prince spent 15.5 hours laying down the song with engineer Peggy Mac. She had only done a few sessions so far with Prince as he had just transfered his base from Hollywood Sound to Sunset Sound. Once Peggy's shift was done, Terry Christian took over engineering duties the next day (the 17th) for some overdubbing. On the 18th, Bill Jackson took over engineering more overdubs and the song was eventually mixed on the 19th with Peggy Mac back on engineering duty. This was the final recording session for Controversy. Prince continued to mix and overdub songs over the next week, but Private Joy was the last song actually put to tape. With it's linn drum (the first as far as I know on a Prince song), it would have fit nicely on 1999, but I don't know where I would have put it! In my opinion I thought that the song was placed nicely on the album - after 'Do Me Baby' - a dark (and superbly composed) love song followed by a burst of sunshine. | |

That is one song that I don't know how it was written. You are right. He composes his songs using different instruments all the time. I seem to recall a story about him writing a track on Controversy (maybe it was Annie Christian) in a bathtub while he was in Florida, but I'd have to check and re-check my notes. One of the most interesting ways he lays down (or at least FORMERLY did) tracks and rhythm was to set up two tape recorders at his piano and record himself laying down a human beat box, then playing it in tape machine #1 while playing the piano and recording it on tape #2. He's bounce these back and forth and create a sort of multitrack recording of a demo. Fairly interesting way to do it! There are also stories of him leaving songs or fragments of songs on someone's answering machine so he wouldn't forget them.
