It was 1984. Purple Rain had yet to come out and I had three Prince albums, Dirty Mind, Controversy and 1999. I was playing them a lot, trying to absorb it all. Private Joy was not really on the radar as there was so many other songs to obsess about, like Lady Cab Driver, Let's Work, etc.

So one day my best friend comes over and inevitably I put a Prince record on. I decide on side 2 of Controversy, figuring he was tired of hearing 1999. Prince was a fairly minor act and I didn't know anyone who truly liked him besides my sister, who liked stuff like Do Me Baby.

Anyhoo, my best friend listened to it sitting down and we reach the end of Let's Work. I go upstairs to get sodas and when I came back he had taken the liberty of starting the record again at the beginning of side 2 and he was dancing. That's when I knew I had to pay more attention to this little piece of musical heaven.

Believe me, no you don't! It's Latoya for goodness sake! You're better off getting William Huang to cover it. (BTW, that's the Asian dude who sung "She-Bangs" on American Idol)

This kinda passed me by for some reason, until now. I really dig it just now, it's a great tune. For me it's got a place somewhere between Contreversy and 1999, as opposed to actually fitting the Controversy album cool

The reason is that Private Joy was the last song recorded for CONTROVERSY. Although it existed before as a song called "Dear Uncle George", the version that made it on the CONTROVERSY album was tracked on Sunday August 16, 1981 at Sunset Sound. The session was scheduled to start at noon, but the actual recording didn't start until 7:15 P.M. Prince spent 15.5 hours laying down the song with engineer Peggy Mac. She had only done a few sessions so far with Prince as he had just transfered his base from Hollywood Sound to Sunset Sound. Once Peggy's shift was done, Terry Christian took over engineering duties the next day (the 17th) for some overdubbing.

On the 18th, Bill Jackson took over engineering more overdubs and the song was eventually mixed on the 19th with Peggy Mac back on engineering duty.

This was the final recording session for Controversy. Prince continued to mix and overdub songs over the next week, but Private Joy was the last song actually put to tape. With it's linn drum (the first as far as I know on a Prince song), it would have fit nicely on 1999, but I don't know where I would have put it!

Maybe that 'splains why it sounds like something between CONTROVERSY and 1999.

Nice post, thanks. That may well be the reason.

Private Joy keeps you jumping. It's such a great song. That whole Controvery album is superior work as far as jamming is concerned. And I think the song Sexuality is so underrated....it's such a cool number and beautifully executed.

Funny, I've always thought it was about masturbation. It certainly does use drug imagery ("shoot me up, baby. Let's take a trip") but I've always gotten the feeling it was metaphoric for wanking.

I just love this track to bits. When I make a tape with songs for non-Prince fans, this track always gets included.

Has he ever explained ANY of his song's meanings? Dude loves to be cryptic.

Still convinced this song is about tossing though!
