Private Joy

This kinda passed me by for some reason, until now. I really dig it just now, it's a great tune. For me it's got a place somewhere between Contreversy and 1999, as opposed to actually fitting the Controversy album cool

Same here. That linn-drum pattern is awesome. So is they bouncy synth and the vocal. Orgasmatron.

One of my all time favorite Prince songs ever. When the Controvery album was released the Rnb station in my hometown would wear this song out. Did a 12'inch of this ever exist?

Not meaning to start a debate but "Private Joy" is a prime example why my favorite Prince years are pre-Purple Rain. Prince has always stated how it is too easy to crank out a funky hit, which is part of the reason he doesn't necessarily always do what fans want, but I just don't enjoy post-Purple Rain Prince funk like I did during those years. Maybe it is because I was much younger at the time, but IMO "Private Joy", "DMSR", "Let's Work", "Soft and Wet" and even "Delerious" are classics that get a RnB audience on it's feet every single time.

Those years are what attracted me to Prince in the first place and those songs can stand alone even today. Love me some "Private Joy".
I am convinced Beyonce's career would not be where it is, if she had dark skin.

What exactly makes you say that? I mean, Controversy did come directly before 1999, so what puts this song in particular in the limbo between the two albums for you?

yeah I know, but to me it just seems to be a mix between both albums, you know a bit limbo. Almost like it fits on a non existant album in between the two.

The reason is that Private Joy was the last song recorded for CONTROVERSY. Although it existed before as a song called "Dear Uncle George", the version that made it on the CONTROVERSY album was tracked on Sunday August 16, 1981 at Sunset Sound. The session was scheduled to start at noon, but the actual recording didn't start until 7:15 P.M. Prince spent 15.5 hours laying down the song with engineer Peggy Mac. She had only done a few sessions so far with Prince as he had just transfered his base from Hollywood Sound to Sunset Sound. Once Peggy's shift was done, Terry Christian took over engineering duties the next day (the 17th) for some overdubbing.

On the 18th, Bill Jackson took over engineering more overdubs and the song was eventually mixed on the 19th with Peggy Mac back on engineering duty.

This was the final recording session for Controversy. Prince continued to mix and overdub songs over the next week, but Private Joy was the last song actually put to tape. With it's linn drum (the first as far as I know on a Prince song), it would have fit nicely on 1999, but I don't know where I would have put it!

Maybe that 'splains why it sounds like something between CONTROVERSY and 1999.
