prince's feauture films are : purple rain (1984), under the cherry moon (1986), sign o' the times (1987), and graffiti bridge (1990).
in both purple rain and graffiti bridge, prince plays the kid, an introverted, troubled musician who only really comes alive on stage. in under the cherry moon, he plays christopher tracy, an american pianist, who is also a gigolo, living in the south of france on the fortunes of rich widows. in sign o' the times, a concert film, prince plays himself. i honestly don't know what prince's films have been rated, but i think purple rain was r and the others maybe pg-13. purple rain is a fast, exciting film that showcases mainly prince and the revolution and the time in riveting concert sequences. the performance of the last three numbers, purple rain, i would die 4 u, and baby i'm a star, have been called the greatest twenty minutes on film in rock history. in 1985, prince won an oscar for best orginal score. the weakest part of the film is probably the plot itself, which is somewhat trite and unimaginative. sign o' the times, on the other hand, offers little else than electrifying performances by prince and the 1987 band. the sequences are linked together very loosely by dream-type vignettes. under the cherry moon, by contrast contains no musical performances, except for the opening scene of christopher at the piano, and the credits, which is basically the vid-clip of mountains. this film, which prince directed himself, tries to capyure the ambience of 1940s romantic comedies. despite all the negative press and poor box office showing, many feel that under the cherry moon is a very funny, likeable film. its best asset is probably the stylish sets and visuals. graffiti bridge was shot on very little money (prince spent 7 million -one million below the film's budget), and has a homemade feel about it. despite its being marketed as a sequel to purple rain, graffiti bridge is little else than a series of vids from the album linked by dreamy dialogue and a battle-of-the-bands plot. Correction: Prince one for *best original song score*...which, was was the subject of big debate over at the nowe dead GD. Best song that year went to Stevie Wonder for "I just called to say I love You" from Woman In Red. We still dont know why this category was awarded and for how many years..I cant seem to find any info beyond Prince's win...go figure... as far as his movies go, ill pass...(except for SOTT). | |
