- Actually, I never liked things like ´the greatest´when it comes to art, because every artist has his/her strong and weak points. Herbie Hancock doesn´t know how to play drums, but he is a monster on piano, so he played and studied a lot. But as a musical force, in terms of playing and composing, I found someone who had lots of genius power too...Frank Zappa. I am discovering his music now, and he is an amazing musician (an amazing guitar player and arranger), songwriter (very unique) AND composer, since he recorded classical compositions made for orchestra. I recommend his work for those who want unique stuff made by a genius mind. |

Just the other day I sat down with some of the luminaries of the org such as icenine, King Sausage, pfunkjazz, supernova etc and we all decided unanimously that Prince is indeed the greatest musician the world has ever seen. He is by far the greatest composer, guitar player and pianist to have ever graced this planet.
I just hope this settles this question once and for all! We also agreed on the following, which can now be referred to as facts: -- President G.W. Bush is not only the greatest President the USA has ever had, he is also the worlds most prominant intellectual thinker. -- That Paully Shore is the most under-rated actor of our generation. -- That dot.com stocks are the best way to invest your money. -- That OTAN is actually the name of a grizzled, itinerant goat herder from Nepal. Thesis:
Musically, Prince's original, creative, and abundant output of songs, including the range of various styles compared to other artists is amazing. Not many musicians can touch Prince. Of course, you have to like his music, which is subjective anyway. But let's take into account the following other supporting arguments: A) singing -- Prince is a great singer, has a great voice which he manipulates with different character, and of course, he has amazing range. B) dancing -- just watched Sign O the Times and the guy's jumping around like a freakin' jack rabbit. He's definitely got groove, flexibility (ouch!), dexterity, and all out charisma. C) instruments -- Prince can not only PLAY many instruments -- but at a level that's clearly above par. One of the most underrated guitarists ever. Try conceiving that one person put together I COULD NEVER TAKE THE PLACE OF YOUR MAN x1000 and not an organized band --that's versatility baby. D) lyrics -- Prince continually comes up with original concepts and ideas expressed lyrically for great hooks. His words are imaginative and detailed (the I HATE U monologue). And, if he is writing the NPG commentaries, books shouldn't be too far behind. Conclusion: Take into account all of the above and who else does all this? I make no claim to have listened to every singer/songwriter and all the other unknown jems out there with amazing talents, but in my opinion, one would be hardpressed. End of report. | |

In truth i think this topic has all the trappings of a wrestling match lol ... u cant argue with someone who has determined that prince is the best musical mind ... just take their opinion 4 what it is, im not trying 2 supply pessimism with anything i comment on, i do remember that your realities Rn’t mine & your likes R’nt mine but i have an opinion 2 & i’m a blabber so bare with me hehehe. Personally i believe he has a super technique, its pervasive and inescapable, even the most complicated of his generation but 2 conclude that he’s the best of all time, hhhmmm. Talk about vastness, considering music is a part of every culture/civilization and is involved with the history of man in the first place i dont think the question of the ‘best’ in general is rational. The answers r ubiquitous, already im seeing that the question is causing some social problem, one person’s right 2 surround themselves with thoughts of prince as the best musician may very well interfere with another person’s right not 2 be subjected 2 thoughts they do not care 4. But keep in mind music itself is subjective just not completely or else it would have no form. So it all works out in the end ... hehehe objection is the ticket 2 music (sorry i kinda went off a little) Anyway music has its roots, its been growing and growing since its foundation (there is joy in repetition hehehe), following the path of all things mathematical ...
