Prince's last great pop track

I don't necessarily mean a single or a top 10 hit , but I am interested in the idea that Prince may have got writeers block at some point which may have lead to him losing the knack of creating a tight 3 or 4 minute memorable piece of magic.

To kick off I think the his last great pop track with great lyrics, melody and hook was Gett Off. You could argue it was strctly speaking a funk track but it was something that crossed over and was memorable. It's ashame it was so long ago considering Prince was one of the last great pop song writers of the last 25 years.

Sorry i didn't read your post fully, discounting hits, i'd say 'Supercute'. If that gotten airplay, and been widely available, i feel it would have been a smash. I've played it to non-fans and they dug it.

I think Prince's last truly great pop song was Interactive, which is a rather sombre point really considering it's 12 years old.

Songs that had a faint glimmer of that pop sensibility in them, but not enough to make them more than nice derivitives of _____ (add your own parent song):

If Eye Was The Man In Your Life
Cinnamon Girl
Baby Knows
Sleep Around
She Loves Me 4 Me
New World
Judas Kiss
Come On
Mad Sex

I haven't heard all the downloads. So dont' kill me. But the last truly great pop song Prince released was 7! That song was phenomenal. It's one of those songs that make you sing it when you hear it. The only other song that comes close to it is When Doves Cry. But 7 was the last great one for me. That song was so good, it's kept me a fan until now...

If Musicology dosen't count then I don't know what does.

Mr. Nelson used always release a big pop hit before each major album release ala 1999, When Doves Cry, Raspberry Beret, Kiss, SOTT, Alphabet St., Batdance, Thieves, Gett Off, Sexy MF. None of these belong amongst my absolute favourite Prince tracks but they all do have merit and commercial clout. In my opinion Musicology is cut from the same cloth. Didn't Morris once say that Prince could write a hit single standing on his head?

I think the last great pop tune was Cinnamon Girl. Before that, it was Vavoom and My Medallion. They would have made a killer double A side.

I was going to dispute this, but Jam & Lewis wrote Fishnet, right. And Jesse Johnson wrote Jungle Love. I'm sure Morris must have written some hit songs at some point or other. Did he write "Are You Ready", cos that track was awesome.

I can't beleive nobody has mentioned "A Million Days". I always hear people say that it's been done already or whatever, but I don't care, that's a great tune!

Prince's last great pop song was only 2 years ago on his last release ! A little song by the name of "Call My Name" !!! This was an excellent pop song and people responded to it after the first time they heard it. In DC the song was #1 for 3 weeks in a row ! The song is almost a sequal to Forever in My Life and Adore. Prince has not lost his touch in creating a "catchy pop song" he just choses to challenge his audience instead of being like everyone else. That is the reason Prince is Prince. People may not buy every cd he comes out with , but they respect him as a very creative and talented artist.Just like Chris Rock said remember back in the day when you would fight over who was better Michael Jackson or Prince,Well Prince won !!! nuff said !

His last great one was probably A Million Days, but before that you'd have to reach back exactly one decade to find Dinner With Delores. Great, great tune.

Good point but one that in 25 years of buying his music i have heard as an excuse more and more in the last 10 years - yes the challenging of fans is what we love or loved about Prince ...but lest we forget Prince started off making sweet melodies and pop lyrics that George Harrison, Marc Bolan and John Lennon would have been proud of. It just seems that even songs like Call my Name (and a host of other R n B style tracks) wouldnt have made the cut 20 years ago. I respect the view that he has made some good tracks more recently but I just miss the feeling of wow!! that he would conjure regularly before.

Yeah, right!

If you found anything challenging on Emancipation, Rave, The Truth, High, NPS, Musicology, NEWS - then you might need to widen your musical intake past top 40 radio and MTV! lol
