Strangely enough, I have wondered if (part of) this song is about me and my wife. We stopped off at Paisley on a cross-country drive, and while trying to find a reception area, I was surprised to find that the door to his recording studios was open. We went inside, but felt way too shady to stay, and ended up knocking on some other doors. We finally met Jeremy Gavin (I think that's his name), who was bringing the proofs of the Rainbow Children album booklet to the park. He was a really nice guy.

Anyway, this was in August 2001, and the song premiered the following month on the Sept 2001 Ahdio show, before its release on the ONA piano album the following May.

So yes, that line about "If I leave my front door open, would you come and visit me?" has always stood out to me - I'm sure my wife and I were on camera as we walked into his recording area.

It definitely sounds like it could be a song about not being able to please his hardcore fans. Pretty funny, actually. Then again, it could always be about Mayte.

i have always thought this was his personal dig against the fans who didn't blindly shovel the shit on a platter down their throat that he's tried to serve over the past decade.

The song is fantastic tho biggrin One of the best of the club nod

I agree. I also think it has a strong "7" vibe, musically (minus the choir).

f i leave my front door open
would u come and visit me?
Just 2 slander my name hopin'
that i would pack my bags and leave...
If i did would rembember
2 feed the dove aad clean the cage?
And never count in front of the children
lest they die of old age

I dont really know y we have 2 go r separate ways
Whether or not we grow after the seeds r sown
Only time ca say...

Can i offer ubaklava
or a bagel with cream and cheese?
Will we say grace 2 r father
holding hands on down on or knees?
R we better off just fighting?

U on ur side, me on mine
R the words that i keep writing...
only pearls b4 the swine?
What mmakes men claims that ur a friend
when u're not at all?
They knock u down and then,
they lift u again, just 2 c u fall...
But like a bird i'll keep on singing...
a song that never leaves ur mind
If nothing else u've taught me one thing...
"Never cast pearls b4 the swine"

That's gotta be about his fans now that I look it over.

Yes, I remember Supa´s thread about this. I guess it´s mainly about his fans and other listeners who are hard to please, maybe critics and other musicians as well (Beck, D´Angelo and the usual suspects).

The line with baklava ( a Middle Eastern dessert ) and a bagel with cream cheese( Jewish) could be about his desperate aim to bring peace/harmony etc., could also be about the conflict in Israel/Palestine etc. and his diverse fanbase which consists of a multitude of different faiths and ethnicities.

Snap

I thought the song was about the "naysayers" reaction to The Rainbow Children after the Celebration that year??
