It would be a great country tune with Bonnie Rait playing slide guitar. Prince would have to wear that overall getup (Muppet Show) in the video.

Did you see the muppet Show show?

I did see the Muppet Show. I thought it was funny and really cute. Also, I have the long version of America. Do you need it?

Well, as a musician who's played in his share of bands, I can tell you from experience that sometimes you're just in a groove and you don't want to stop. That's what being in a band is all about - all the musicians on one accord. Sometimes, you have those days when everyone is on point and you just keep going, especially when you hit a funky groove and you just wanna work it. It's as simple as that. Sometimes, it just feels good, whether tape is running or not. Musicians live for that moment. Believe me, it doesn't happen everyday. You gotta milk it while you can. It puts all the bs that goes along with being in band to the side. It becomes all about the music. When I listen to the extended version of "America", that's the impression I get.

One of my fave gigs was with my old band - we grooved on a jam for over thirty minutes. Technically, our set was over but it felt so good that our drummer just didn't want to stop. So, he kept it goin' and we grooved until we couldn't groove no mo cool The audience was feelin' it, too. They seemed to sense that we were in the moment, so to speak. Cool times.

Even with all that said, you gotta wonder how Prince was in that "groove" with a song like 'America.' I would've stopped before the 3 minute mark...But that's just me...

I think the jam might have been recorded becuz Prince had the feeling he should fill one side of a 12" to the max, which is what he did.

The original jam is even longer. Go figure.

Prince wasn't kidding when he commented on Soul Psychedelicide's length on Joy In Repetition. That song first got jammed on with The Revolution, of which a version circulates that lasts up close to an hour.
These jams were often just for the sake of getting a feel, or getting it right.

eek for.real!?!?!?!? drool

btw how long is the original jam? i love the 20minute+ version, but its not one of those that i can just put on, i gotta be in the mood for it

I made my own edit of 'America' - just the first 12 minutes or so. This includes the cool guitar solo after the album version ends.

After about 12 minutes nothing much happens. Now if they were recording with a really good funk drummer and they were improvising, but ...

A cool extended version at 12 minutes or so. smile

Uhp. It's still alive. I see breath on the mirror. I think America album version was about 3 1/2 minutes. If that's what you're asking. Tambourine kicked ass on that album.

yes tamborine is def. kick ass. but what i was askin was how long is the origninal america jam. cuz huey said it was longer

speaking of Bonnie... did any of the prince/bonnie songs even come out?

and i have to tell my "America" story: in 86 my dad sent me to Mexico to get some fule. After I pump i discover NO WALLET. So i just gave him what i had mostly in pennies and left... and i headed as fast as i could to the bridge. and i got there and there was a line... and i kept thinking i am going to get arrested in mexico... as i pulled to US check point "waaa waaaa waaaa" (or whatever that sound is) comes on and i pulled up to the guy and said "US...nothing to declare" and he said "go on" and i was never happier to be in AMERICA listing to AMERICA.

But didn't he extend the song only afterwards? I think that's the case with many of the longer extended cuts he released on the singles.

mostly, but not in all cases, the 21 min version of America is how it was
originally recorded (and the same goes for the 9 min version of Pop Life).

It jams! I know the beat transitions by heart and I find myself accidently playing the entire 22 min., which, to me, seems like only 12 min. 'cause I enjoy it so much. I usually reserve the 22 min. version for the 4th of July.

Its true Prince and the Revolution just jammed and jammed, and at the time Prince had Miko Weaver from Sheila E's band (Who were having Romance 1600 being done by Prince at the same time) jamming on it along with horn players Atlanta Bliss and Eric Leeds. It helped too when a video recordered in France in October 1985 featured an expanded line up playing it.
Maybe also Prince didnt have a BSide for it. Girl and Hello were pretty lame. Its not new, how about I wish u Heaven parts 2 and 3 and 7 minutes mo quake!

The song has a "House" beat to it. "House Music" was getting popular(at least in NY) during that time. So if you were at a club dancing, the long version of America was the ideal "House" record, since it went on and on with a repetitive bass beat. I never heard it in a club though.

I don't think Atlanta had anything to do with America. As far as I recall, his first session with Prince was for the song MOUNTAINS, which was recorded on Saturday, November 30, 1985, a year and a half later.
The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/
