Where were you when you heard your first Prince song and what was the name of the song? I was in a record store and someone put on the track title track to the album "Controversy".
It rocked, and I rocked. I was booked and hooked to Prince from that moment on i love you for who you are, not the one u feel u need to be.

The summer of '84...My cousin picked me up in her truck and while driving she asked me to reach in the glovebox and grab the white tape...she played "When Doves Cry"
I haven't been the same since.

1985/86: I remember my friend, Stacy, blasting some crazy song called Kiss from her new boom box while we were waiting for the school bus when we were in 5th grade. I thought it was the coolest song...and it's still one of my favs.
That same year I remember being inspired by the song Pop Life to write a short story about soda. ('Cause in the midwest, soda is called "pop".) I was a weird kid... Also, the girls in my high school used to play Darlin' Nikki before volleyball games against a certain rival school. One of that school's star athletes was named Nicki and they thought playing that song would get in her head and ruin her game. (They alway started it after the masterbating line though--too risque for HS athletics, I guess!) The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Ah cool I want to read that short story :p
I was born in '88 and my dad loved his records too so I've always known Prince... But I'll tell you my first memory of a prince song: The Most Beautiful Girl In The World was playing on Mtv while my mum was watching it, I was so confused about his high voice... I remember asking my mother: "Is that a boy or a girl?' and she got really irritated :'It's a boy of course!' Ah where has the time gone of sweet innosence?

It was sometime in 79-80, whenever "I wanna be you lover" came out..I was driving back from college, when I heard the song, and the lyrics, "wanna be the only one who makes you cum...runnin..."
I've been a Prince fan ever since

My mom was blasting Purple Rain to show me how awesome P was...I thought it was kinda boring but after hearing some other Prince songs, I've come to appreciate it much more. I love it! Prince says my name in one of his songs. In Little Red Corvette, he says, "Liz is on the verge of being obscene" Ha, ha, just kidding. But seriously.

The first Prince song I've ever heard was probably "Baby I'm A Star"!
When I was a kid my parents had lots of tapes full of songs they recorded from radio and they've always been listening to those tapes. Many years later I revisited some of those tapes and I discovered "Baby I'm A Star" - I was very surprised because I didn't even remember that track; although when I first listened to my "Purple Rain" cassette I felt like I'd know "Baby I'm A Star" - and I just listened to it the first time consciously! You know, when you see a face and you feel like you would have met before... So, I think it was "Baby I'm A Star" and I've even had no idea what was that - I was around 5 years old... (Sorry for my crap English... )

AND I'VE BEEN HOOKED EVERY SINCE "STOP LYING" my thoughts EXCATLY... i did see prince on "american bandstand" but i was like 10 or 11... and i though ... "oh i he is gay... i should listen to him it will piss my mom off" (we lived in KEY WEST and the pastor at our church was crazy) it was not until 1999 came out that we had moved and i heard LRC and 1999 on the raido... and then this girl at school had a 1999 tour shirt and i thought it was cool. so she made me a copy... then i got her to make a copy of contravcy.... then she found it! and she heard the last song. she played it for our pastor. He called me out in CHURCH! and then they had a record burning that night. and it was all my fault. then the fist thing i bought was ATWIAD

I was in my back yard, soaking up on the sunlight, and I had the radio on. Controversy played over the airwaves, it was "a new song by a new artist". I thought it had a groove but sounded a little electronic and unprofestionally recorded for my taste. I still think it sounds that way. News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so. You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

I was hanging out in suburbs for the 1st time in my ghetto life and "Soft and Wet" came on the radio in my aunt's car. I was not paying attention till I heard all the panting and clapping at the end. We were still doing The Bump then. I thought Prince was a woman. Then I got hold of a Right On magazine and Prince was on the cover. "I been his ever since, if anybody ask me; I belong to Prince". I remember walking home on the road without sidewalks, I could not stop staring at the magazine. That memory aint going nowhere. I would to see that cover again. I was eleven then. P said he was 19.

We had two on AM and one on FM. The funny thing is, if we went out of town, once we got far away from town with a long way to go before we reached another city, the only radio stations we could pick up were country. Ain't no way I could have lived in those small towns. Andy is a four letter word.

1987, back when sott came out--Q-102 (top 40 fm station in my hometown) used to play "u got the look" like crazy. also i remember seeing the videos for both that song and "icnttpoym" on friday night videos a lot, too. i was about 6 years old at the time. i didn't know who the hell prince was, but all i knew is that the song(s) was pretty cool.
and the thing with my early experiences with p was that i didn't put 2 and 2 together till a couple years later; i still remember seeing the lovesexy album on display at music circuit and just being entranced by the nudie pic on the cover, but not thinking much else of it...also i remember seeing the video for "alphabet st." a lot back then and digging it. prince really didn't kick my ass till seeing the "kiss" video on the jukebox network (remember that, ya'll? it usually came on a staticy-assed channel and was good if your folks couldn't afford cable ) when i was 9. edits you control! I don't even know where it is...but I don't think you'd want to read it; I'm sure it was pretty lame...and it had nothing to do with the Prince song--except the title, Pop Life. Sadly, I don't remember much of the plot (if there even was one). It was really hokey. All the diet sodas were female & the regulars were male. Of course, Dr. Pepper was a doctor (how unoriginal, right?); and Mr. Pibb was evil--I don't remember why. He stole something maybe? But in addition to the story, I drew pictures of each charater---the opening of the can was their mouth and then I added eyes & hair. Like I said, I was a little off... The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Controversy was the very first song. I was in the back seat of a friends carr coming back from basketball practice.Did not know who or what it was but I recall my brain and my ass conspiring to move me with out my OK. It was tight and diff. I Loved it but could not find out who it was uhntill a couple weeks later. When I found out I listned as often as possible. The Second song was D.M.S.R., this was my music. It was excitement and literaaly gave me energy mentally. Hard to explain but could change depresion to joy in the turn of dial. Have never listend to it with out dancing my ass off.

I was in bed one Sunday morning watching a television show and the "Little Red Corvette" Video came on. The host of the show raved about him as "the new big thing from America". I liked it because it was so different.
When my brother bought the Purple Rain LP we played it all day and I became a fan.

I was four when Batman came out and I saw it in the theatre. Not sure which song actually comes first in the mvie, but the first Prince song I remember hearing was Partyman.
Incidentally, it was also my first movie on the big screen. Ah, memories. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"
