Well, I saw the 12' version of Little Red Corvette and flipped, all the while wondering what was going to be so different about it compared to the version off of the album. Up untill that point, I wasn't that crazy about the song. I prefered "Lady Cab Driver" and "Automatic". I was happy that Little Red Corvette was a big hit for P (MTV WORE this video out), but still, it was very MOR. But when I listened to the long version, right away the Lady Cab Driver style funk was brought out in the mix. Simply put; the bass guitar! Man, I thought, why didn't P put THIS version on the album?! Because P wanted, ..ahem..NEEDED a crossover hit at this point and he didn't want to blow it with getting too funky. But he made up for it in this mix. The tracks were there all the time, he just buried certain ones for FM radio. The funky bass guitar doubling the funky bass keyboard line, plus his "May Day! May Day!", this is one of his early 80's funk cuts! Just the second half of the song alone. This is P's "black" version of Little Red Corvette. O.G. P fans will know what I'm talking about. Anyway, who out there digs this version?
----- Co-Sign on everything you said. May be really see how damm good he is. He took a middle of the road pop song and turned it into something funky. I just recently got this on CD and now I can die happy. I have seen the 12 inch sell for as much as $100.00. Yep. Like I've said before on different post, this is when P was in a zone. Everything the brother put out during this period was hittin'. I know many of ya'll on here weren't even hip to who P was, let alone into his music. That's why LoveSexy gets so much love, cuz that's when many on here first got into P. And that's cool. But coming from someone who has been hip to P from the get, his 81-84 period is untouchable as far as him having the Midas touch. And this version simply showcases this in spades. This long remix version was done well after 1999 was even released. He went in and did the remix after the single was released for a dance mix version that was de'riguer(sp?) of the times. But this was done way AFTER LRC original and 1999 album was already released. | |

And Davis Z and The Jets copied the fuck out of this remix version with their first single debut Curiosity. It has Prince LRC remix bass and melody all over it and that same geetar chicken scrach sound and melody of the remix. I can't believe Prince didn't sue.
But then again he stole the original version LRC from Kim Carnes Bette Davis Eyes anyways so..... | |

Whatever the case, all I know is that black radio used to play THIS version when MTV was playing the video and when the 45 edited version from the album was released. I have the 45 single and bought it when it was first released. I bought the 12' very shortly after. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I was at a friends house when it came on near midnight and flipped. 3 years late hearing an awesome LRC version that I lived and died with. After that I requested it always and my search for it was on. It took five ytears later to finally find the versions on 12"vinyl and later on import French cd. But most stations weren't doing remixed versions anyways back then unless it was r-n-b radio. And the album vwersion was a blatant stab for rock cred and rock radio play in the vein of Springsteen (and Prince and Fargnoli said as uch in the famed 82 L.A. Times interview). | |

STILL never heard this version to this day JUST TO HARD TO FIND!! I wish I had known that last year. It's very hard to find. It was even hard to find back when it was popular. I never saw the 12 Inch in any of the stores. The record store told me it was an import and ordered the 12 Inch import from London for me. When I got it home, it was the album version. For years, I wondered if it was a radio promotional version only. I never got my hands on it until 2000 when I ordered it off a site. The one I have is a funny looking three inch CD. I have it on a European CD single that also features another song ("1999" or "Let's Go Crazy"...can't recall,I'll have to dig it out and check). It is labeled as "Little Red Corvette (Special Dance Mix)".Bought it from Tower Records in the 90s.So it's out there,y'all just have to look around. | |

Typical bad editing. ----- It is the black version because this is the version black radio station played. Why don't you ask yourself this question? How come Pop stations did not play this version back in the day? As Boris rightly said, pop stations don't play 8 minute tracks as a general rule. They still love there 3.5 minute 2 x verse 3 x chorus single. Less main stream stations can indulge alternative mixes far better, from pop or RnB, to classical and rap. It doesn't make it a "black version". Calling it a "black version" is simply adding a colour when there is none. . | |

Nothing to get offended about, S Meat. This was the version that black radio would play, not the album version, sans me calling this "the black version". Unedited/extended, whatever. I would tend to believe it was unedited. No different from the unedited versions of Darling Nikki, The Beautiful Ones and Computer Blue. But, neither one of us were present when the song was cut, so...Point being, this version is hella funky. No offence taken! I find the whole "labeling" thing very interesting! . | |

See back in the 80's we had this little think called radio formats. They were suppose to be broken down by the type of music but we know it was sometimes broken down along the color lines that might respond to the music. How old are you because I should not have to explain this? Realize if this version had been 3 minutes long Pop stations still would not have played it. | |
