It is still a fairly funky album, compared to the insanity of The Rainbow Children (Which only sprouts 2 good tunes 1+1+1=3 and She loves me 4 me) - I love - Until U're In My Arms again, Come On, Wasted Kisses and Mad Sex. Not his best piece of work, but not his worst by far. I loved the exodus, but only for the Hendrix meets Dylan and the Beatles in a Cannabis fountain style !!

I'd give it a 5 out of 10 , its ok Prince with 2 excellent tracks , but in comparison , I'd give every album he released before it a 6 or higher , so I guess its one of his weakest efforts I still listen to it and enjoy it though. There's only 2 on it I really like (The One, Come On)... 3 if I'm really bored (Wasted Kisses is okay)... on a scale of 5 it gets a 1.5

IstenSzek said: mad sex come on the one wasted kisses there we have it. if he woulda just released an EP or released these songs online to the club or somethin', it woulda been a fan favorite. 'come on' is a freakin' phenomenal prince song, and if you don't think so, listen to it again. it is. it's frustrating that an album that has some of his best '90s songs also has some of the absolute worst songs of his career on it...i know it turns a lot of people off to the good stuff on NPS. i guess i'd give it a 5/10.

its one that I put in the most for shoo be doo, come on, wasted kisses and the one. Freaks on this side make the cut some days but it is one that I listen too the most We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color. Are there NPS outtakes? If there are, perhaps you could take the strongest material from NPS and merge with outtakes for a stronger album?? Come on is a killer track. Plus the remixes are great, the extended and the late night mix. That was a fun maxi single for sure 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

That was a fun maxi single for sure the only one I keep hearing about is "Sadomasochistic Groove" that was an outtake from NPS. it's certainly a lot better than Push It Up/Freaks on This Side or the horrible "I Like Funky Music". but it used to be even better, the sample posted on npgmc a long time before it was released through the club, sounded so much better and so much more "wild" in a way. it had this echo and this pinball arcade roll/drag to it. at the same time there was that sample from "Funk Radio" which i think was from the same sessions, and so probably an outtake from NPS too. i don't know, i just wish he'd put some more rock on there like a good clean version of "Ur Still The One" and the first "Beautiful Strange", plus "Sadomasochistic Groove" and some other tracks. That would have made for a far better album already.

The re-worked version is a piece of shit compared to the stripped down acid trip that was the original. A totally completely original and wacked out sound from Prince. Should have stuck with it and not produced the hell out of it. Some things, like the original Crystal Ball, are meant to be bare 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I had 2 listen to it before I put a number. So from 1 to 10 New Power Soul gets a 4. Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

I don't rate it as high as 1999, Parade, Lovesexy or TRC, but it's actually one of the albums I listen to the most. Indeed, I think it's one of his most underated albums. Listen to the interplay between the keys, guitar, synth strings and horns on "New Power Soul"... Listen to the reverse hi-hat and rubbery bass on "Mad Sex" mixed with the bebop-ish piano/horn line... OK, "Until U're In My Arms Again" might not be anything new to Prince, but it's a great display of his vocal abilities... Listen to the stop-start rhythm of "When U Love Somebody" and the trampoline bass followed by the funk workout outro... Listen to the lyrics of "Sho-Bed-Ooh" and the extra harmony used on the final chorus. And the light starlight keys in the background, not to mention the way the bass never starts "on the 1", it's always behind the beat... "Push It Up". I used to hate this until I started hearing that crazy sound like a car starting in slow motion. And that crazy crowd noise used in the rap section. Oh, and the variation of the reverb on the snare... Listen to the tightness of the horns on "Freaks" and the scary vocal effects. Reminds me of "There's Other Here With Us"... "Come On" is simply the greatest track from the Emancipation/NPS/Rave era. Killer chorus, killer hook, camille voice. Enought said... Listen to Rhonda's delicate playing on "The One" and Prince's silky vocals... "Funky Music" is probably the only track I don't dig... And finally, "Wasted Kisses" is up there as one of his most honest, hearfelt songs. Hidden among the story of someone being gunned down, I think there is some real truth in the song regarding his relationship with Mayte at that point in their relationship... Anyway, there you have it. NPS is a great album I agree with all of this (well, I might not call it "great"), except I hate When U Love Somebody until the part where it changes to the minor key at the end. I'd rate it as an 8 comparing it to other artists, but a 6 for Prince. That's about as low as any of his stuff gets, though. It's inspired by the Jam of the Year tour, and concerts are not about revolutionary ideas, they are about fun and jamming. That's what a song like Push It Up is about. Almost every song brings back a memory from the concert. Mad Sex, Push it Up, Freaks..., I Like Funky Music all were either played or were inspired by the concert. I love this album. It's like an unexpected little album that for some strange reason reminds of the Lovesexy album...call me crazy.
I give it a 7/10. I didn't see any of the concerts, but I have one on vhs and those songs seemed to great live. But the cover is wack . [Edited 12/28/05 18:06pm]
