Rate New Power Soul

How would u rate it on a scale of 1-10. If casting a vote, please only go to 1 decimal place, i.e 0.5, NOT 0.55 and i will find the average.

U can discuss it all u like too. Sound like a game? If its sucsessfull (and my track record of threads on here bets it isn't), i will gladly do other album ratings too..

OK, quick review

1.0

Given the more focused, clean, crisp, and very poppy sound of 1996's "emancipation", what the hell was prince thinking, doing an album of lamely produced, dull funk licks? Lyrically he is at his worst and most banal too. Prince, lyrcially has never been that good, but if the music and arrangement etc.... is there, then i oversee it glady, but the lyrics, as well as everything else, are rock bottom and sound like half eaten leftovers of songs that were no doubt puke to begin with. Only the real hardcore must like this album, no offence.

The lyrical theme seems to be some sort of revolutionary bull about "new power generation" (he musta been high on arrogence, or something to be so lyrically piss poor as demonstrated on "freaks on this side"). The production is hollow, shallow, and so empty sounding. Prince, u shoulda got in a producer in for gods sake, as this album proved u needed some direction. "Exodus" was good, this is just nasty on the ears. Shame as "emancipation" was consistant for its 3 whole hours. This is crap by the first 5 seconds.

Saved by one song, the emancipation sounding "when u love somebody", still proving he can plop out a good pop number, on a album surrounded by lame funk dross.

I quite enjoy the album (moreso than Rave, infinately moreso than Chaos & thingy) but i'm certainly not gonna put my neck on the block and rate it on a scale of one to ten - what...you think i'm mad or somthin'? big grin

whats wrong with rating it? I dont come to this part of the site often, but hey, i think 1.0 was about right.

I would love to see some higher scores. I always remember this part of the site being a lil' too serious on the criticism tip. Even the cover of "new power soul" was shit. So, i would of liked some defending for my score, or opposing to other scores etc.... Maybe this site ain't ready for it.

Lets debate about albums.

ehh..if its a New Power Generation album then its aight to listen to as a throwaway...

this should have been a protegee album (or released with no name) cause its aight to listen to but isnt worthy of a full on prince release.

Uninspired, unambitious, tedious, plastic sounding funk. Prince just sounds so, so phony on this album, like he's trying hard to pretend to have fun. Plus, crowd chant choruses? Larry Graham? Lyrics where Prince is trying embarassingly hard to sound cool? More Kirky J?! No thank you. The album sounds rushed and half assed.

It would have been if given the same treatment as Exodus. Imagine what the album would have sounded like with a cohesive band behind it. He was KirkyJing it up at this point.

I give it a 6 because even though it's totally plastic, I love at least half the album and Wasted Kisses is just classic.

8/10 cool

I don't rate it as high as 1999, Parade, Lovesexy or TRC, but it's actually one of the albums I listen to the most. Indeed, I think it's one of his most underated albums.

Listen to the interplay between the keys, guitar, synth strings and horns on "New Power Soul"...

Listen to the reverse hi-hat and rubbery bass on "Mad Sex" mixed with the bebop-ish piano/horn line...

OK, "Until U're In My Arms Again" might not be anything new to Prince, but it's a great display of his vocal abilities...

Listen to the stop-start rhythm of "When U Love Somebody" and the trampoline bass followed by the funk workout outro...

Listen to the lyrics of "Sho-Bed-Ooh" and the extra harmony used on the final chorus. And the light starlight keys in the background, not to mention the way the bass never starts "on the 1", it's always behind the beat...

"Push It Up". I used to hate this until I started hearing that crazy sound like a car starting in slow motion. And that crazy crowd noise used in the rap section. Oh, and the variation of the reverb on the snare...

Listen to the tightness of the horns on "Freaks" and the scary vocal effects. Reminds me of "There's Other Here With Us"...

"Come On" is simply the greatest track from the Emancipation/NPS/Rave era. Killer chorus, killer hook, camille voice. Enought said...

Listen to Rhonda's delicate playing on "The One" and Prince's silky vocals...

"Funky Music" is probably the only track I don't dig...

And finally, "Wasted Kisses" is up there as one of his most honest, hearfelt songs. Hidden among the story of someone being gunned down, I think there is some real truth in the song regarding his relationship with Mayte at that point in their relationship...

Anyway, there you have it. NPS is a great album
