Uptown's really cool. I like other stuff on there as well, but I just think it's some of his weaker stuff.

It's a funny little album I suppose. I love it but I'm never sure why and I think it always sounds like a "demo-tape".

But I think that might also be one of the reasons I DO like it so much.

Whenever I tell non-Prince fans about this album I think they'rew always thinking "What the hell??"

so N.E.W.S., NPS, Rave, GB, D&P etc are ALL better than Dirty Mind to you?

Courtesy dictates i should respect your opinion, but DM isn't just about how it sounds, whether you think it's weak or not, you have to go back and put it in context. This was a guy under pressure to deliver a hit album for a major record label after being given (at the time a decent sized deal, he didn't sell so well with his first two albums and was under pressure to deliver), so what does he do? he does whatever he likes, gets kicked from radio stations for graphical content and imagewise he was far out too, all this ish was pretty much unheard of at the time for a young black guy trying to 'make it', but he didn't deviate, he risked ridicule but carried on regardless. I'll bet any money WB were wondering what to do with him back then.

Prince was hungry for stardom, yet at the same time wouldn't be dictated to.

Dirty Mind deserves a lot of respect.

It was pure Prince, after that he diluted himself somewhat and went for the crossover, although there still wasn't a bad album in the first ten years.

i can't really choose a worst album, though there a few clunkers ers post '88, all have a few redeeming good songs though.

NewPowerSoul. THat is VERY easitly said. He spread himself WAY to thin there...he had one good sone and made an album so he could put it out. The One. The One is a good song...every other track on that album is near trash except for the hidden one which is strange enuff 2 b good.

I'm just not part of that school of thought that puts whatever he put out after the 80's was absolute shit. If anyone else did his post-80's stuff it would be amazing, but because he's Prince and even his fans don't appreciate that stuff, it will just be forgotten music. I appreciate Dirty Mind for what it is, but it being a rebellious album doesn't make it one of his best IMO.

No, it being rebellious doesn't make it great. The fact that it flows perfectly and effortlessly combines so many different musical styles into one tight, ambitious punk album does.

I certainly wouldn't list Dirty Mind as his worst... that'd probably go to N.E.W.S., or TRC.

On the other hand, I'd say that Rave and GB are most certainly better, overall, than DM.

Murph's Top 3:

1. Rave (A poor attempt to reach his glory days with needless cameos)
2. Chaos & Disorder (Yeah, I know...It was just a big "Fuck U" to Warner Bros. and "Dinner With Delores" was cool, but the album still sucked...
3. Symbol Album (I liked a few tracks on that album like "7" and "Sweet Baby", but I was ready to bury Tony M and the gang..

I think Chaos is great.

What i find really surprising is all the people who hate Lovesexy and The Rainbow Children, which imo are 2 of his best.

New Power Soul is a huge steaming pile of shit.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

The Truth

i'm really curious as to how you got to picking The Truth as his
worst possible album?

i've seen you mention it several times now so it's really quite
a solid oppinion of your's isn't it?

but why? there is so much to love about this album and it has so
many good, solid songs on it.

is it because he tinkered with too many "ethereal" sound effects
on it when he should have left well enough alone and just made a
acoustic album?

i'm genuinely curious.

or is it just the songs that you don't like? i mean, a song like
"Don't Play me" on it's own redeems it from being his worst ever
album.

perhaps i just can't see it because i rank it among my personal
favorite Prince albums. it is certainly in my top 5.

The Truth is pretty awesome. How can you possibly find some of his most personal lyrics and ominously stripped down music boring? The Truth is like a melancholy confession.

The last two. Mushyshitscatology was Prince by numbers and sounded like it had been written in Sony's boardroom with marketing people and a stopwatch; SNOOZE is Prince's laziest and sloppiest album.

Prior to that, they've all had their moments, even the mediocre ones like NP Soul and the two versions of Rave.

Funny how tastes are different....lots of people put The Rainbow Children as one of the worst albums, when actually it´s one of his best albums when it comes to MUSIC.

I bet that, if the lyrics were about masturbation, sex and anarchy, the same people would have considered it his best album...go figure...Prince made lots of embarassing lyrics even on his classic albums...

But it happens to every Prince album...even the weakest ones have great moments, and the great ones have embarassing / very bad moments.

I'll take the occasional silly line over an offensive or hurtful one.

- I have to agree with you...I didnt like the storyline of TRC too, and he was offensive on two or three songs...but the music there was soooo superb...it wouldn´t be fair to put it as the worst Prince album...he made other albums that sounded a lot cheaper and rushed...without great lyrics also...
