His fans? His tour and album that year were received quite well by his hardcore fans.

Not disputing that, however, the question asks what's the WORST album. I'm simply comparing 88' (Lovesexy/Black Album) to other years. And compared to his great years, IN MY OPINION, 88' sucked! Plain and simple. Rock Hard in a Funky Place, Cindy C, and Bob George are great Black album songs to me, and LoveSexy has some great instrospective and enlightning hits. BUT COMPARED to his other album successes, 88' was a joke. I never said a THING about his tour, because I LOVED the Lovesexy tour. I was there when he shot Cat on stage while performing Bob George. ("might be little but it's loud." BANG!); while Cat falls back in acrobatic fashion and dies. So, no, when I down his 88' albums, I'm only saying they suck in comparison to his OTHER successes.

Five Worst:

1 - The Vault - a bunch of scraps and he ruined old friend 4 sale
2 - Rainbow Children - a lyrical mess, mean spirited and frequently a musical snorefest
3 - NPS - Prince hits a creative wall. nothing new here, keep moving
4 - Musicology - has the worst 2 prince songs ever on an official album (life of the party and Cinnamon Girl)

For # 5 its a 3-way tie:

Graffiti Bridge - just hasnt aged well at all. (thieves in the temple and joy in repetition are still quality tracks tho)

Rave = some great tracks (I love you..., so far so pleased, tangerine) and, except for the title track. greatest romance and Silly Game, not as bad as its reputation but the general cynism with which he approached this project left a bad taste.

Symbol = The whole gun mic, three chains of gold story, Tony M etc...just plain old bad

Damn!! I forgot about the Vault. That album sucked!!!!! "She spoke to me" is the only good song on there.

No, you didn't forget the Vault! That was the 1st one you listed.

Anywayz, you realize you hate 7 Prince albums! WOOOOO! You sure you're in the right chatroom!?

i'm really curious as to how you got to picking The Truth as his
worst possible album?

Because I hate accoustical or any other type of stripped down music. I hate today's hip hop for the same reason, the instruments are stripped down and only a slow beat remains. With accoustical, only a guitar (and a boring sounding one at that) remains.

It also reminds me of folk music which absolutely bores the hell out me. I feel like I'm listening to John Denver instead of Prince. This is the picture I get in my mind when I listen to "The Truth"....

Kumbaya my lord....kumbaya....oh lord....kumbaya..... bored

That's far from my type of party. This is my kind of party with plenty of ass shakin'.....

.

aaah, so that's the reason. now i understand. thanks!

Diamonds and Pearls.

Aside from "Cream," there's not a single song I even remotely like on there. The record sounds flat, yet too busy at the same time. It's by far his weakest work, in my eyes.

Uhhh, you realize it's your avvie, right?

Indeed, sadly I just really, really like the cover art. Kinda shallow, now that I think about it. lol

Since he told the guy what to write, what thoughts to have for the songs, when to breath and eat;and he layed down all the music, this qualifies as a Prince album. tease

I loved Madhouse and his live jam sessions, but could not get into News.

If I could turn back time and avoid any of his albums they would be:
"Emancipation" (Bloody awful, an enormous disappointment, and only one great song on it.)
"Come" (hated it at first listen, still feel the same now.)
"The Vault" (threw it away after one listen.)
"NEWS" (nothing really wrong with it, just very, very boring.)
"Symbol" (loved it at the time but quickly grew to hate it. Tony M. Rrrrr.)
"Diamonds & Pearls" (very overrated at the time. Hated four of the tracks - "Strollin'", "Money Don't Matter 2 Night", "Willing and Able", "Jughead" - right from the first listen.)
"For You" (VERY dated, lots of "boingy" synths, all falsetto.)

And the ones that get me shot for daring to say bad things...
"Lovesexy" (left me cold. Prince made a downturn from here.)
"1999" (never liked it. Two or three classics, but every song goes on WAY too long, and some of it is cringeworthy.)

Welcome to Org.

Why bother with challenging people? There are as many opinions on Prince's music or best or worst album as there are Orgers.

What I like are the people that challenge people wy not calling them names, but offer an alternative, or try to questions certain people's choices.

And on topic; to me any album that does not play naturally or sounds too conceived does not work to me.
If I look at albums that I never play as a whole, then certainly albums like The Truth, The Rainbow Children, One Nite Alone (the studio album) and Diamonds & Pearls score high points.

It is just too bad Prince's output after WB is always stained by his own unwillingness to stick with a project and by the highly personla agenda's he tried to shove down our throaths.

At least, when still having to battle up against, let's teasingly call it a 'master', his music was firm. Songs were crafted, polished until they were right, not just whipped out in one morning, just for the sake of whipping out music.

Even though the music did not capture me, at least I liked the way Musicology sounded like it was shaped around a theme, not just a lil' collection of tracks he picked offa the vault shelves.

I miss ART DIRECTION, single sleeves, vinyl labels, a few good photo sessions that tie all the different singles together.

Again, I rather have Prince release tracks as singles and forget about albums. Let him be the modern day James Brown/Miles Davis in respect of releasing tracks. Two new ones every month. Might give NPGmc a sense of direction as well.

If I was pressured to pick just ONE album? Then I go for Emancipation, even though it contains a few ace tracks, as a whole it is just bland and like someone above me mentioned; plastic soul.

i'm not saying you can't dislike the album. i'm laughing because it
seems so silly to listen to an album ONCE and then throw it away.

i've had many albums in the past that i would listen to once i got
home and think "oh hell this is drab" only to rediscover it a while
later or have my attention drawn to it again by a single on radio
and realise that there were some good tunes on it or that in some
cases, even the entire album was brilliant.

first listens can be deceiving, that's all i'm saying.

you didn't even like "Sarah", or "There is Lonely" or the exquisite
loungy "When the Lights go Down"?

I didn't like a single track - sorry! "The Vault" was the album which finally "lost" me with Prince and I completely lost faith and patience with the man. A lot of my Prince albums are now stored away from my main CD collection as I really don't like them, but "The Vault" was the only one I felt the urge to throw away when I moved house. Really makes me think that the songs in the vault really should stay there as they are unreleased for a reason - it being quality, not quantity, control.

As a Prince fan for 23 years, I love all of his work. But, I guess the album that I never really listened to alot is Lovesexy. Something about it just wasn't quite right sad . So, for me, that is his worst album.

I'm amazed by the hate 4 Lovesexy! (and the Black Album 4 that matter).

KS and NPS r my least listened to, and least faves, tho I would probably tie in Rave.

I wasn't planning on posting coz I thought that list would b predictable, but I guess the org has become more diverse than it used 2 b!

D&P had the shortest shelf-life of any albums I liked for a while (and much of it never did it 4 me at all) and GB was largely ruined by the film, tho there is enuff brilliant material to save it. Emancipation also raises mixed feelings, but again that saves these 3 from being "worst".

In fact my choices stem from the simple fact that I couldn't care less if those 3 albums had never been made. The only tracks I would want to save are "Wasted Kisses" and "Pretty Man" (both hidden!) and "ILYBIDTUAM" (which I guess puts Rave 1 place above the other 2).
