So what if she doesn't have an album, Britney Spears does but that doesn't make her a vocalist does it? lol Not suitable for an R & B record? So ATWIAD, Parade, SOTT, the Black Album, and The Family albums don't count as even a little R and B to you? I'm a fan of both and have seen them both live numerous times. If I was putting together a band and needed a vocalist Susannah would be my first choice for her ability to fit her voice to any style from Prince to Pink Floyd.

Sorry, but ATWIAD, Parade and the Family are not full on R&B records. And she only sang minimal back up on SOTT.

They don't have to be full R&B albums to prove the point that she can do it.
Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

There are a smattering of R&B songs on those albums. Your point (seeingly) to the other poster was that her voice is as soulful as Teena Marie's and then you presented the above albums as examples. I disagree and so did the other poster. But my original point was that Mr. Hahn's comments were suspect and biased as all get out. Of couse he's entitled to his opinion but calling Teena Marie's voice "chirpy" and Susannah Melvoin a "skilled vocalist" is just absurd. And even though he was not comparing the two women his comments were laughable as Teen's 11 or so solo albums prove.

I just did. shrug I think Susannah's singing isnt all that and I wasn't mood by it, and yes I heard her sing before live and in the studio. BUt Teena marie now that is the soul sista who has a very powerful and soulful voice. Susannah's voice maybe suitable for a rock or a pop song but an R&B record hell no. If Susannah's voice so all that how come she doesnt have an album yet? Teena Marie is not only well-known but has many albums to back her up. And Teena Marie didnt have it easy either when she first starting out.

So what if she doesn't have an album, Britney Spears does but that doesn't make her a vocalist does it? lol Not suitable for an R & B record? You're tripping right? Now I am really questions your knowledge about some R&B after you use the examples of those albums that you mention above. Because majority of his R&B fans left Prince after Purple Rain, in case you didnt knew. And they doesnt consider ATWIAD and Parade to be r&b albums and the closest R&B of those both albums PERIOD is Kiss and Girls and Boys, although some R&B lovers will disagreed on that one. And on SOTT and the Black Album was his more R&Bish/funk albums but Susannah sing more on popish songs like Starfish and Coffee and plus Prince didn't use her as much either.

You entitled to your own opinion just as long you chill of me saying mines. But I think that many R&B and funk lovers agreed with me that Teena Marie's voice superb over Susannah's. Some people even go as far as saying Teena Marie is the "The white woman with a black voice" but I dont recalled anyone saying the same about Susannah.

Now if I put together a funk band, I would get Teena Marie. And I trusted my ears and Teena Marie could get down with her vocals and I also question Hahn's R&B crediblity too after he made that remark about Teena Marie. Because I know damn well that you cant find too many people who were into 80s R&B doesnt like Teena Marie's voice.

Why you bring Brtiney Spears in the mix? what does Britney has anything to do with Susannah not doing a solo album? I am talking about Susannah here and again if you think she is all that then where is her album? How come more R&B singers doesn't called Susannah to sing backup but will do so for Teena Marie and Prince dont count since he know to do crossgenre and plus he used her more often to sing especially when they were dating. and I don't recalled Prince bragged about Susannah's voice as much as he did when Jill Jones or Rosie Gaines was around.

Sorry but Susannah have that girly, popish voice and I trust my ears and I just didnt hear a soul in her voice. And I disagreed that Susannah's voice can fit any style because I think her voice is more suitable for a rock pop or alterpop style lol lol

Why even argue about this?
Teena Marie was a legit star in R&B in the 80's.
Susannah is a former Prince girl .

Teena Marie by a 1st round knockout

I've been EXTREMELY hesitant to get this book because of all of the things I've heard about it and that it seems to be quite bias towards Prince but after reading the Alan Leeds thread, I've finally decided to swallow my pride and if I'm feeling up to it (i'm sick right now), I'll make a trip to Barnes & Noble and see if they have the book. I think I'm ready to read it.

I'll just leave it at you have WAY more trust in your ears than I do wink Until you see Susannah live singing songs by herself I don't think you can speak on the subject.

Someone must have told you wrong. Like I said I heard Susannah live by herself and especially when there were good audio clips available from those shows she done this year with lisa and wendy. I want to hear Susannah out of curiousity since a lot of people on here bragged about how good of a singer she was, so someone directed me to the link. I heard her singing and she wasn't all that to me. I never said she couldnt sing, I said she not nearly good as Teena Marie and also her voice is more suitable for a rock and pop song where there is less requirement of having a soulful voice. If I am going to pay to hear singers with voices live it would be Mary J Blige Teena Marie and Aretha Franklin. Even Nikka Costa can outdo Susannah and that girl have some soulful voice and it just ashame that she not well-known or even on the same status as Teena Marie because her songs are crossgenre like Prince she isnt going to get the R&B or funk lovers into her music easily.
You trust your ears with Susannah and I am going to continue to trust my ears and going to speak on some good real soul singers, so stop tripping of me not feeling your girl. lol lol
