I mean, I think it SUCKS that people and Critics wanna PIGEONHOLE you into ONE CATEGORY and when You TRY to CREATE New and EXCITING GENRES ya get DISSED or PANNED. What a REAL Bitch that is for an ARTIST. I just HOPE PRINCE DOESN'T GET DISCOURAGED and Continues to Follow his MUSICAL VIBE...

if a person is going to be an artist of whichever type - musician, writer, sculptor, painter, etc - they pretty much better accept the fact that not everything they create is going to be appreciated or like by everyone. if they're too sensitive and lack the confidence to handle that fact, maybe they better not create art to offer up to the public, know what i mean?

as far as Prince being pigeonholed, that happens to practically every artist also that becomes megahuge for one thing they've done: be it an album, a role they played, etc. sometimes the artist can work themselves free of that pigeonholing, sometimes they can't. i guess if they can't, and the public won't embrace whatever it is they're doing/trying no matter what, after awhile the artist better stop worrying about impressing the public, just be grateful for the massive fame and achievement they made at one point, and just create what they want just BECAUSE THEY WANT TO CREATE.

all that said, i doubt Prince is feeling frustrated that his new music isn't being embraced or appreciated by everyone, because he'd be a fool to even THINK that "everyone" is GOING TO embrace his new sound.

i think he's just doing what he wants to do and is maybe HOPING his work is appreciated, but if it's not, i don't think he's crying into his pillow about it.

From Alan Leed's comments, it does appear that Prince gets frustrated when his music isn't embraced, as happened with the failure of 'If I Was Your Girlfriend' as a single. I expect he has developed a thicker skin since then because so much of his music hasn't been as embraced as his earlier work.

I guess you are either the type who takes criticism on board and uses it to improve and challenge yourself, or you ignore it and do exactly what you think is best anyway and come up with something uniquely individual. Either way can lead to brilliant results. I guess Prince takes the second path more often.
