Maybe it's because people outside of hardcore fans see him as a washed up 80s hasbeen. I'm not saying that, but that's how most people feel.

Yeah, people always say that crap. But I never heard anyone who knew much about music put him down. And if you talk to real musicians, they have much respect for the guy. You also have to realize that his music doesn't fit easily into categories and most people are uncomfortable with that fact or freak out every time they hear something a bit different. And homophobia is huge so a little, shy guy with a high voice doesn't stand a chance against that kind of stupidity.

Everyone I hang out with is close to my own age so they loved Prince at one time of their life. They never really talk about him being gay, they mainly think he's lost his mind musically. It doesn't bother me one bit.

I hear tons of young people calling him homophobic names which I could care less also. When they say "He's a fag", I usually say "I certainly hope so" or "If you hate him so much, then why the hell are you giving him a complement". That usually pisses them off and they say "Complement hell, that's an insult" and I say "What insult, you didn't call him straight". I've been known for turning the tables on people because "gay" is only an insult if you consider it to be one.

My friends have never really dissed P. I remember when we were 14 or so and I hooked one of my friends (a real music lover and great drummer) to some P tracks and he digged them (altho he likes some of the new P stuff more than the earlier stuff cuz he ain't too much into the 'eighties sound' as he puts it ). Another one of my friends told me he won't dare listen to P cuz he's afraid he'd like him . Anyways I played some P at my 18th bday and he was there too and he was all like "Oh so this is the stuff you've been listening to most of your life? Not bad at all" .
