Prince: Bluesman

Just watched the "Rave..." DVD; one of my favorite parts is when he just plays some blues and sings about his "little puerto rican baby don't live here no mo'..."

Any opinion on Prince as a bluesman? Don't know enough about the genre to know how to answer, but I loved his guitar work...
batman guitar

Some people tell me I've got great legs...

Prince is, at times, an astounding blues guitarist. It's his strong suit. Listen to the solo in the remix of "Greatest Romance," and you'll hear him killing blues guitar, Hendrix-style. He also has a great feel for the blues and can infuse songs with some wonderful moments and unexpected blues changes.

My favorite blues moments by P (off the top of me noggin):

1) The Truth
2) The Ride (Crystal Ball version)
3) Papa
4) Savior (toward the end)
5) Under the Cherry Moon (piano solo)
6) Question of U
7) Joy in Repetition
8) The War (guitar solo)
9) Temptation (another Hendrix ode)
10) 5 Women (he apes B.B. rather admirably)

I agree, Prince is quite the accomplished "Blues" Guitarist.....Shame he doesn't play more, would be nice for Prince to do one !!

Would love to hear him do Voodoo Child too !! Besides Hendrix, the only person I have heard do this half decent is Stevie Ray Vaughan.

PurpleRein

It would probably sell to hard core Prince fans only, but a Prince blues album would be incredible

he rocks..my all time favorite lick is in the segment on live from syracuse when he first comes out (on purple rain) wearing the black hooded shawl and playing the hohner tele...there is one lick (in fact its almost the last one before he goes and gets the white guitar) that to this day still blows my mind. wink ...

He was in a very bluesy mood that night. Later, in his distorted "Cloud guitar" solo, he's rippin' some nasty blues runs. headbang
