Have you ever been on a flight with Prince?

Has anyone ever seen Prince on a plane? Talked to him? Considering he flys so much I wonder if any fan has looked over and seen him sitting next to you? Stories anyone?

I expect Prince flies first class up the front. I expect his entourage books up the whole first class section. So I don't think an average member of the public is going to be allowed anywhere near him.

Unless someone lurking on this site is very rich AND a celebrity, I don't think anyone will have any stories of sitting next to Prince. The only people that can afford to fly first class are rich people and/or celebrities, strangely enough rich people and/or celebrities tend not to spend a whole lot of time on fan-sites, they're usually more concentrated on staying rich and famous and/or getting richer and more famous.

A CJ column from April 2004:

Prince's bodyguard doesn't spend all of his time at airports allegedly stealing cameras from college kids who take photos of Symbolina. He can apparently be very considerate when there's a baby on board.
Matt Smith, a chef at Vincent, offers this evidence. He was flying to the funeral for his grandmother, Ruth Smith, in Amarillo, Texas, with his wife, Janet Hughes, and their 9½-month-old son, Owen. "The flight was overbooked, so the three of us were upgraded to first class, front row," Smith said. "The plane boarded, and we noticed that there were a lot of ground crew milling about, seeming to be doing nothing. We waited and waited, and finally five minutes before departure, His Purple Highness breezed aboard, accompanied by a handler."

Smith says handler; I say bodyguard. "Prince sat in 1A, handler in 1B and my wife and I were in 1C and 1D, respectively. Prince was very quiet [no big surprise)]and spent most of the flight listening to Usher and the new Janet Jackson CDs on his Discman. He and his handler were very nice and unobtrusive.

At one point the handler had to retrieve an item from his bag, which was in the compartment over my head. He noticed my son was asleep in my wife's arms, and so he was very careful to remove and replace the bag and close the compartment as quietly as he could. Very courteous."

The flight landed in Dallas-Fort Worth and "as soon as the seat belt sign was turned off, the handler got out into the aisle while Prince darted ahead to the front of the plane," Smith said. "As they were leaving, a passenger from a couple of rows back called out, 'Good luck on your show tonight.' Prince stopped, looked back at him, and said very quietly, 'Thank you.'

"The next time there's a rock star on board, Smith said, "I hope it's Prince. People can say what they will about him being aloof, but I would much rather have an aloof, quiet, solitary celebrity on board" than one drinking and disrupting. "By the way," Smith added, "I didn't try to take his picture. I like my camera too much."

What celebrity snappers, such as Anthony Fitzgerald, have to learn is to take the picture and then +stash the camera in your underwear. Most bodyguards wouldn't go there.
"I would say that Prince's top thirty percent is great. Of that thirty percent, I'll bet the public has heard twenty percent of it." - Susan Rogers, "Hunting for Prince's Vault", BBC, 2015

Thanks CandaceS! I always suspected Prince was very pleasent to fly with. I know one lady that was on his flight in 1986 from London to the US and she said he was very talkative and kinda nervous about flying that day. biggrin

I was sat next to prince in cattle class a few years back. he was going mental at a stewardess because they didnt bring him a vegetarian meal. The dispute was resolved by giving prince a free drinks tab for the remainder of the flight. we nailed a bottle of JD between us. great times

Never been on a plane with him, but I have sat next to him a few times at cubs in NY. Most notably at Nell's after his concert at Radio City Music hall. He kept staring at my wife. I felt like a dork because after he left, I took his napkin and straw. Still have them along with a tambourine he tossed my wife at a show he did in a small club in NYC. Talked to him briefly one night as well a few tears ago when he was hanging with Q-Tip in NY. He was really cool and relaxed during that period. Around the time he was promoting Emancipation.

Unfortunatly no!

But one of my longtime friends was his personal "tour-bus"-driver through europe during the ONA - tour. Only longer distances (i.e. Milan -> Amsterdam) where flights, all other distances have been made by tour-bus.

At this time I saw the bus with Prince in Berlin in front of his hotel. My friend came out of the bus and talked to us, but Prince didn't show up until we left the entrance of the hotel.

In Zurich we met him again and my friend took us into the Kaufleuten to the Aftershow-Party, allthough it was crowded to the last place. Very funny situation there: the Kaufleuten Security told us, that there is no place and we cannot go in - we called our friend (btw. Klaus is his name) on the cell-phone, he came out and sait to the security: "my friends will come in for sure, because he is directly from the ONA-team and can decide" ... after 1 minute we were in and later the evening Prince show up at the Kaufleuten ...

But as my friend told us, it was a funny month, Prince often talked to him while longer drives, took the sit next to the driver and choked around.

He described Prince as a very funny, gentle guy, sure he is a superstar with superstar-attidudes, but not to much of it ....

Yup. I was on a Northwest flight from Hawaii back through MPLS. Mayte was in the bathroom as I walked on board, I went up to Prince and told him I enjoyed the concert the night before (they were in Hawaii for their Anniversary), this was '97 I believe.

Prince just nodded with his big doe eyes and was polite but I'm sure if Mayte was there, would have loosened up a bit.

Northwest had orders not to let anyone get too close to Prince, so I guess I lucked out by going up there before the flight began.

Ah, memories of Nell's .. wink

I wasn't hip to him doing afterparties there at the time. But I did know the he made "appearances" there and I always dreamed that I would be fortunate one day. Do you know when he was there last?

I was sad to learn that the club closed last year. End of an era.

Remeber the song, "It's About That Walk", where he references Nell's... I smiled when I heard that for the first time.

"U just got back from paris
U probably went to buy some clothes
Ure on your way to nell's in new york
Gonna meet who? heaven knows

But it ain't about where u're comin'
It ain't about where u go
It ain't about who u've been with
cuz it ain't about who u know"

It's about that walk - can we talk about it?
It's about that walk - I wanna shout about it
Come here, babe.. yeah...
