Getting Married

OK I am getting married next yr. How could I turn my reception into a Prince theme wedding without it looking cheesy? Or should I just have the music? Any ideas? confused

i know it's your day but you've got to ask yourself would all the guests appreciate a Prince themed wedding? young folks, old folks etc. If not, have your first dance to a Prince tune (if you can both agree on one!) and have a few scattered throughout the night.

utimately it's entirely up to you and your betrothed what you do. Have fun!

and congratulations!

Thanks for the feedback. So if anyone could suggest some songs for our first dance that would be great. I thought of Adore,The Greatest Romance. There are so many.2 bad I can't have them all. It's really hard to incorporate Prince when you are having a Puerto Rican/Greek wedding.

well...I think as long as you don't go over the top with it your "guests" and that's what they are...right? will enjoy what ever it is you do....and if they don't...it's on them.

Go with Purple as a wedding color or one of your wedding colors. Mine were Purple and Yellow. I had little scrolls of paper on each setting with the lyrics to Adore on them (I did make a lil change in the words for the "I ain't fucking just for kicks part..I think I used Loving..lol)

and how bout lace....you could use alot of lace....lace place settings, lace gifts? lace gloves? just a lil prince here and there and a few Prince songs scattered through out and ta-da! smile good luck and congrats! biggrin

A very pale purple and white would be a great color scheme for a wedding. Mostly white with hints and accents of the pale purple.

The dance between the bride and the groom could be "Friend, Lover, Sister, Wife". I would have the DJ to play several Prince songs throughout the night, which would be understandable because I'm sure the guests realize that the bride/groom or both is a Prince fan. However, limiting the music exclusively to Prince only would be overdoing it and would seem obsessive. It's your day but you want your guests to enjoy themselves also so the party won't end too quickly.

Anyway, good look with the preparations and congratulations.

congrats on your weeding.
You could always incorporate the color purple, of course into your wedding. Purple looks nice with gold, silver or white.
If I get married, I thought about doing a Prince theme too.
Another idea: You can have his symbol printed on cocktail napkins. That's a small touch, nothing over the top.
Wedding Songs: Adore, Crucial, Call My Name.
Maybe your champage toast can be in purple glasses or even purple dye in the chmapagne
You have to let us know what you decide to do!!

Damn U, FriendLoverSisterWife, Adore, Call My Name, Te Amo, The One, And God Created Woman... These are all great choices to rotate along with some faster songs. The idea for purple splashed here and there is cute also, like the purple champagne. The lyrics of a song in the program/invitation or with the place settings is a good one as well. Most of all, have fun!! After all, u are paying for it!

Congrats!

How about Forever in My Life for the first dance? (That was JFK Jr's first dance.) I like that better than Adore, and it's not as common, imo.

Also, I Wish U Heaven might be nice for a later dance. Get the nice, sappy Prince songs out of the way first when all the old folks are there and then after they all leave turn out the funk! biggrin

You could also have Prince themed foods like Raspberry Sorbet, Peaches, Starfish (cookies?) and Coffee... (I'm just throwing out ideas here...)

depending on how much you are spending.
(other than your cake your shades of purple should be pastel)
your cake should be white with natural colored purple flowers.
maybe artificial doves could be part of the centerpiece decoration at the
reception tables, with light purple color mints.
the brides maids could carry light colored purple roses...no purple dresses though!
the men could wear light purple colored roses on their lapels
the flower girls can toss light purple colored rose petals
the ring bearer can carry a light purple pillow with a purple satin ribbon
colors of your wedding should only be pastel purple and white...
one exception to the pastel preferance, maybe the ceiling center pieice could be darker colored purple wedding bells (made of paper) with white satin streamers, and white cut out muscical notes attached to the streamers..
hopefully these ideas will be a catalyst to help you.

Thank you, I am getting married myself and this has been quite helpful as I wanted to do a similar thing.

I must ask though why you stressed the purple should be of a pastel shade and also why the bridesmaid's dresses should not be purple? Any particular reason? Just curious. Thanks smile

As a veteran bridesmaid I can tell you the answer to that: because NO ONE thinks purple bridesmaids dresses are cool except the bride. My sister-in-law's were lavendar barf I dyed that sucker black as soon as the wedding was over and now I wear it as my Halloween costume. (Holly Golightly, Travelling.)

I guess subtleness makes a louder statement. The lighter puprle gives off an aire of innocence and lightness. However scatterings of the darker purple like maybe some of the musical notes being purple might give one the emphasis needed. Also someone could rent or supply a couple of plasma screen TV and have on going shades of purple showing on one or two walls with their choice recordings of Prince tracks playing softly. As far as the brides maids dresses (maybe pastel purple or) off white with light purple voil stole type shawls. To me the darker color purple would overshadow the bride and groom.

my matron of honor wore purple, and she chose the color. I told her as long as it was in the "purple" family, be it lavender, purple, whatever, but she chose the purple and looked absolutely stunning in it! pastel purple was too light for her!

we had both lavender and purple accents. when choosing colors for your bridesmaids, go with something that will compliment them, which will in turn compliment you wink

I don't think you HAVE to use light purple but if you go with a darker purple you might want to use it a little more sparingly...so that is doesn't darken up the whole event.
I think Silver, White and Purple would look great together.
oh the idea of incorporating doves into the theme is a good one. The doves would serve double duty in the meaning department biggrin

I think royal purple is a beautiful color and would look good on almost anyone. Pastels can wash you out, especially fair skinned people.

On another note, you can inlcude this line, in your wedding program:
"Love is 2 weak 2 define just what U mena 2 me" from Adore, of course.

A friend of mine had "Kiss" played at the ceremony at the civil registry office eek . IMO it was not the best choice lol, I would not want a song at my wedding that starts "You don't have to be beautiful to turn me on, I just want your body baby from dusk till dawn"
With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

I would go with Venus de Milo or Alexia de Paris. These are two beautiful and romantic songs. I would leave out any songs that have words for later on in the reception. These two are great starters. No would know they were Prince songs. I played Venus de Milo to someone who hated Prince music and they loved this song. Of course I told them it was Prince after the fact!

Incorporate hints of the color purple in the flower arrangements.
White rose and or lies would look great with a soft purple ribbon with pearl top pins to keep the flowers in place. The green stem, purple ribbon and white flower is a great combo.

Another idea is to have a really festive wedding cake in the color purple. You would be surprised at how pretty and fun colored cakes can be. Check out Martha Stewarts Wedding magazine or InStyle Wedding magazine. These are great resources for elegant and beautiful weddings.

Keep your theme simple. If you really want to incorporate Prince into your festivites, look at the broad spectrum of his career.

Congrats and best wishes
