bowie's new album is absolutely amazing.
i'd also suggest glenn lewis' "world outside my window". he could be, potentially but probably not, the next big soul star. his voice is very stevie wonder-esque, and his songs are surprisingly good. now i know what this is all about. now i know exactly what i am.

How about Tubby the Tuba with Danny Kaye?

Most people laugh at me when I tell them this, but you MUST purchase Sinead O'connor's "Faith and Courage". It is by far my favorite album of all time.
I have given this album to several people and they have all loved it. It is the most honest, heart-wrenching, and empowering album I have ever heard. I don't know you very well Neps, but I'm quite convinced that you will love it. Trust me...

Neps, depends on your mood.
If you want to experience some R&B, I suggest you go buy Stevie Wonders "Innervisions". If you rank rock power, I suggest the Doves. If you want to try pop, I suggest the new Pet Shop Boys album. My ultimate recomendation is go by The Cranberries Album "No need to argue". With that you get a cletic flavour, mixed with folk, pop and rock. .

When I discovered Stevie, I found the richness of his music almost overwhelming. So here is my recommendation. The general consensus is that his dopest material starts with the 1972 album "Music Of My Mind", and after that (especially his 70s output), the albums are very inspiring. After "Music Of My Mind", I went on to enjoy the following albums: Talking Book [1972] Innervisions [1973] Fullfillingness' First Finale [1974] SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE [1976] (his double masterpiece) Hotter Than July [1980] If you were hoping to just dip your toes into the highlights of these albums, then I highly recommend the compilation "Original Musiquarium 1" [1982]. Of course, that is only a small portion of his output, but 1970s Stevie is sort of like 1980s Prince: Most people discover the hot prime shit first, then develop an interest from there.

If you dig dance music check out:
Danny Tenaglia "Back To Basics" Peter Rauhofer "Essential Mix" (it has that 'Mitubishi' song on it, aka Days Go By - Dirty Vegas) If you dig more somber, contemplative stuff check out: Hope Sandoval "Bavarian Fruit Bread" Mazzy Star "Among My Swan" For some cool radiohead-like rock check out: Sianspheric "Somnium" (for the record, they have a GREAT web site. I wish Prince would learn a lesson or two from people like this.) I got the new Me'Shell, I was pretty pumped for the first 3 or 4 tracks, then the album becomes really repetitive and boring. Its all mid-tempo stuff. The lyrics are cool but the music is so lazy, sounds like she's been smokin too much weed. Wasn't quite sure why she kept proclaiming throughout the album how she doesn't like the whole "Pimps and Ho's" scene, but the music sounds like something right out of any R&B/Rap album today. Breakbeats and all.

Me'shell is awesome, check it out... One of my favs is Terence Trent D'arby's "Vibrator." Maybe you've listened to it or not. If not, please take a leap of faith and check it out...

I just got a new cd from a band called "The Hives" the other day. The Album is called "Your favorite new band" and it's amazing. It sounds like it was made in the 60's and it just rocks. Have a listen to it!

I'll second althom on The Hives. "Your new favourite band" is one of the best albums I've heard for a while. They're great live too.
Also, The Strokes "Is This It". If you want to get into Bowie, get "Ziggy Stardust". It's a fantastic album with some real classic songs. Then maybe "Hunky Dory" and "Diamond Dogs".

Hey! Another Hope Sandoval fan. I was going to recommend 'Bavarian Fruit Bread' myself but was afraid of being laughed at... I really don't think 'Among My Swan' is a good place to start your new Mazzy obsession though. Go for 'So Tonight That I Might See' first - you too will be transformed
Also, give Lush's 'Split' a try - my all-time fave

Hey Nep, if you'd like some slow chill-out music for the summer I'd try Norah Jones' Come Away With Me. I have this one too and really love it. If you want to get an idea of it first, you can download live songs from her website (www.norahjones.com/av/default.htm).
For Stevie Wonder, I'd say start with Innervisions. You'll love it!

Lately the "screemin' cheetah weelies" have been in rotation in my car.
Sometimes experiencing older artists for the first time is a treat. Over the last couple of years I've bought a lot of older Steive Wonder (60's - 70's stuff) and most of the James Brown records, Rufus, Chaka Khan, Tower of Power, and Sly and the family Stone. I already owned a lot of those "best of" albums and they just don't cut it when it comes to the original albums and the compositions as a whole peice of work. Oh yeah, if you want to hear some good music, check out this: http://www.frankaxtell.com All Rights Reserved. |

if you are looking for something completely different than prince, but that will musically blow your mind in a similar way, I'd like to recommend Sigur Ros - "Agaesis byrnum" - some of the most beautiful music you're ever likely to hear.
It has't been a great year for new music - the best so far is Mum and Boards of Canada.
