3 Least favorites

1) New Power Soul
2) For You
3) Prince

Although I'm not a big fan of Dirty Mind, for me it's a so-so album with a few very good tracks. It certainly doesn't rank among my least favorite Prince albums.

That's the genius of PRince though--He has so many albums with varying flavors that each different people can love different things from them.

Perhaps they're a fan of Prince the musical genius, not Prince the juvenile satyr. His early albums are nothing to write home about. The first was the best of them. "For You" suffers from overproduction and under-confidence in the vocals but it does give a hint of Prince's talents as a musician. However "Prince", "Dirty Mind" and "Controversy" are nothing more than attempts to attract attention. Musically they're more insipid then the most banal dance-pop on today's charts.

Once he had some success under his belt (... er suspenders), the musician came to the fore, and he's just kept getting better ever since.

Dirty Mind not anything to write home about? That is ridiculous.

You are judging based on what? Do you remember that the album was in the 70s?

There are a handful of songs there that could be replayed and re-released and not only might it chart well, but it would sound contemporary as well. From there to Controversy you go for originality. You take a break on a couple of popular albums and then back to it with ATWIAD.

Rolling Stone magazine has had "Dirty Mind" in the top ten of albums of all time on numerous occasions, but what the hell do they know.

Most Rolling Stone journalists (and I know quite a few of them) have very little appreciation for musical subtlety. They are merely entertaining writers with a good grasp of fads and pop culture. Obviously "Dirty Mind" is an important album in those terms. No one could dispute that. What I said was that the person who started this thread probably appreciates Prince for his sophisticated musicianship, not for his ability to create some kind of raw punk-funk street cred. Great compositions have melody, harmony and rhythmic elements that transcend genre and are thus timeless. Beethoven's Fifth was daringly original when he wrote it. It isn't fresh anymore, but do you think it's not still a great piece of music? A song like "Nothing Compares 2U" will stand the test of time because it's appeal isn't based on fashion; it's just a wonderfully constructed song.

"good grasp of fads and pop culture"

I don't understand your point as Dirty Mind is a great album on many levels, much more so than anything post 90s he has done. Obviously, the levels were energy driven, funky and rocking. I heard "when u were mine" in concert at the Lovesexy concert. It sounded great. I wish I could get my hands on that recording some day.

It's all a matter of criteria. I used to play in a covers band and we did maybe half-a-dozen of the standard Prince hits over a period of time. To be honest, as a muso, none of them really stood out from the rest of the repertoire, and none of the other band members were Prince fans. They didn't dislike him or the songs we played; just didn't think of him as anything special. Recently I got together with two guys from the group and we were casually playing each other some of our favourite music. I played them "Rainbow Children" and "NEWS" and some cuts from "Crystal Ball" and "Emancipation" -- the post mid-90s albums that don't mean as much to you as the early '80s stuff. Well, those guys are now major Prince fans, and I assure you they reckon his early stuff is rubbish. What moves one person doesn't necessarily move another. I like complexity and sophistication in music. Not because it's intellectual. You can be intellectual and cold. But emotions are complex and it takes a certain level of artistic dexterity to express them deeply. What moves you also depends on what you know, what you relate to and how you listen to music. Sometimes it takes a certain level of artistry to excite the psyche. The songs on "Dirty Mind" sound to me like something any muso could throw down in an afternoon. Whereas there's a lot of post-90s that makes my jaw drop and to be honest our old band wouldn't have even tried playing some of them let alone pretend we could have written them.

Dirty Mind was a benchmark for a couple reasons, it was an assertion of individuality, the sick lyrics were part attempt to distance himself from the mainstream and part shock. I never was that crazy about the album, "When You Were Mine" should be in everybodies top ten prince songs though. It was the yardstick that critics measured his work by for years though and more importantly set the stage for 1999 and on. It would have been tragic for him to keep traveling down the MOR road he was on. he learned to take chances and risk being hated here, something every artist needs.

Sorry, I can't help here. I don't have a least favorite on "Dirty Mind". I've loved the whole freaking album since day one! It's one of the very few albums period (well cds now) that I can just let run from beginning to end.

No, everybody's top ten will depend on their tastes. "When You Were Mine" is a nicely constructed, simple pop tune. Nothing more, nothing less. That isn't my cup of tea so it wouldn't be in my top 100 let alone my top 10. I'm not the right person to judge it against other songs of that ilk. People who like simple, catchy pop will have a top ten full of that genre, and will have a reason for rating one song above another. I happen to like harmonic inventiveness, diverse rhythm, elegant melodies and sophisticated orchestrations. So my favourite songs reflect that. A lot of those songs get criticised here as being "over-produced" or "too Broadway" or "too jazzy". To me they're just more artistic. What I find strange is that a lot of fans claim to admire Prince for his "musicianship". Yet as a muso it seems to me they mainly admire him for songs that they think are "cool" as deemed by the rock 'n' roll press. Everyone is entitled to their taste. But to make comprehensive statements about songs being "better" than others, it's necessary to set criteria and have a real understanding of music.

I think this post was about finding everyone's least favorite song on the album... Mine would be "Party Up" or "Uptown," I guess, but it's all really relative, since it is a great album and one of my favorites. Not for its dirtiness or uniqueness (both of which cannot be denied), but because it's a diverse musical pallette, covering pop, funk, new wave, rock, showing Prince's diverse tastes over the course of 8 songs and sounding like it comes from its own planet.

But I'm also happy to see someone out there who like "For You" better than "Prince."

MUSO my ASS !!! I would like to hear you create something as unique or funky as dirty mind in an afternoon...vocals...drums...bass...synths...lyrics...and then on day 2 go out and sell it to the world and make sure its superbad enough to get critical acclaim and to inspire countless other musicians to follow your lead...[Not nice snip - luv4u]
