I don't care if it was never a hit and I don't care that much about the damage it caused. I don't know too much about these facts, my friends think I'm obsessed by him, that I know every detail of his life and career, but in fact I don't, and I never will. It feels like I should have been there. I mean, I was 6 back in 1987, listening to 'Kinderen voor Kinderen', if anything.
This song was the first song I really liked by Prince. It was not Purple Rain, When doves cry or even Get off (the hitsingle of my generation, or almost  )
It was 'IIWYG' that made me go to a concert in 1998. It was this song that made me discover the artist behind the image. So I don't care if it was never a hit. It's mine. Another thing: I really really like the lyrics. I will defend the man in every way, but he's not among my favourite musical lyricists. This song has it though, in its simplicity. I don't associate the word "classic" with the word "hit." Two different things altogether. If I Was Ur Girlfriend is definitive classic Prince. |
