A sudden reminder of Prince's genius and his shortcomings. I remember, some years ago, Prince playing What's My Name, Come and Endorphin machine as encore to a great show. Even though he incorporated What's My Name into the elongated intro of Come, so no fan ever suspected What's My Name was a seperate track until he released it onto Crystal Ball, the absolute joy of being given three new songs as an encore made it a special exprerience.
So, glued to the ground, mouth probably sagging a bit, the memory of that experience is always attached to the song Come. The kick drum that pounded in my tummy stayed with me for weeeeeks. How dissapointed I was when the album Come was released and the pounding rocker he played at the concert was watered down into a shallow R&B track that did not appeal to me at all, esp not in the weird way he remixed the song into seperate parts, what made it, in my eyes, cheap sounding. In the years to follow, loads of different versions of Come came my way, most often in bad quality, and even though I did not care for most remixed versions with that R&B sound, a few early versions had the sound that reminded me of the concert experience, but none worth playing LOUD, know what I mean? Then... come two sweet friends of mine, one of them sharing the song with the other. The other, mixing the titles, sent me a version of Come by mistake, but I was SO blown away... it was the version closest to what I witnessed at the concert. And in good quality! Me oh my. This version of Come has been pounding outa my speakers so often since receiving it, I am, hehehe, don't twist my words, a Come-junkie. I love this song! In my opinion the song as an unashamedly rocker sounds way more natural than the smoothie R&B version. I understand that Prince always tinkers with his songs, to make them fit a certain project better, but when viewing the rest of the material on the album Come, I just don't understand why. The R&B version of the song just does not fit the feel of the album. If only Prince had not been in dispute with WB at that time... imagine... the tracklist of an album containing not only the original Come, but also the original studio recording of Days Of Wild, the best tracks of Come and The Gold Experience and, up to a certain degree, Chaos & Disorder, mixed up into ONE solid album that could have been pimped to the world way better. Herman Come... the song, damnit; you dirty minded!

i bet you got a shitload of orgnotes though i have to agree with you that these versions are absolutely superb. i've been stuck on "Interactive" the entire week, both the CB vers as well as the original cd rom version. such a simple song and yet so fucking kick ass brilliant. it makes me want to scream! come/gold experience is an unrivaled era for kick ass tunes. 85/87 is the songwriting innovative era, but 93/95 is the raw and butt smacking era! and true love lives on lollipops and crisps
